Stage One - Monaco time trial

Tour de France
comment on the article

So, here we go. The waiting is finally over as the 2009 Tour de France opens with a 15.5 km time trial around the famous streets of Monaco.

Astana rider Alberto Contador will be looking to put a marker down and claim the yellow jersey but he faces stiff competition in the form of Swiss time trial ace Fabian Cancellara.

And of course, there is Lance Armstrong as the American competes in the race for the first time since the last of his seven-straight Tour wins in 2005.

Armstrong is an Astana team-mate of Contador and it will be fascinating to see how he goes today - and indeed I cannot wait to see how the entire team politics plays out over the coming weeks. Will Lance really settle for riding for Contador?

And then there is Levi Leipheimer, Denis Menchov and Cadel Evans.....

Today isn't about crackerjack sprinter Mark Cavendish but British interest should focus on Bradley Wiggins and David Millar.

I would love, just love, to know what you make of it all.

Alongside B.Hinault and P.Albert on the podium, was indeed F.Alonso, E.Mercxx, A.N.Other, and S.Roche.

"...and frankly i couldnt care less. I think it is just a waste of time..."

A bit like your comment No.7, about something you couldn't care less about? doh

And football, rugby, and boxing aren't? How often do they get tested?

I watch the Toure for the scenic beauty it captures as it moves through the pastoral bonanza owned by France, Belgium, Germany and Spain.

Doesn't this mean Bradley should be in the points jersey tomorrow?

Fabian will be in yellow, obviously, and second place normally takes the green, does he not? However, Bertie is first in the KOM classification so he'll be in polka - should mean Bradley's in green.

Ha! Much as I admire him, I would never, ever have predicted Wiggins wearing green! I so hope that happens!

"Pity BBC breakfast news sports monkey didn't even know it was starting today"

And on this website, the stage 1 results show the top 10. Then selected others. Sastre. Wegelius and Cavendish. So we don't care about Millar on a UK site? And Cavendish races under a GB license, not an IOM one.

What I really love is the audio clip on that article where when asked his ambitions for the Tour, Wiggins says to win the Tour, and that he wants to be in yellow after Montpellier.
a) that would be amazing, & although he'd have to fight Canc for it, it's possible
b) this un-British attitude of ambition backed up by real talent is so refreshing!

That's funny, the Dutch Eurosport guys (who know very little about cycling, I admit) were just describing Wiggo as the 'laziest guy in the peloton' smiley

I'm watching live coverage of stage 2 already by the way. Wiggins looks weird in green, and his shorts really don't match.
