Athletics needs more media coverage

British athletics

Millions are spent getting the Olympics and hosting it. Athletics is the highlight of the Olympics that is why it is left for the last weeks. The opening and closing ceremony is held at the athletics venue also emphasising its importance. It is the only sport that has a greater mix of nations and therefore viewed by the most countries around the world. Since London is hosting the next Olympics we should be placing more emphasis on athletics and trying to excel in this arena.

We are three years away and still have sufficient time for new people to be inspired and raw talent to be developed. How can we do this? We can promote the sport more by increasing coverage on mainstream TV. More highlights are required that would include events such as Grand Prix and Golden League meetings, European events, World Juniors and other country’s trials. More features on past UK stars, medallist and achievers in athletics. UK athletics need to talk with the BBC. The Manchester 150m road race was a good idea. We need to find more ways to bring athletics to a wider audience and more TV coverage is one way.

London 2012, I have no doubt that we will again be successful in cycling, swimming, yachting, rowing, boxing etc. However, in athletics we may not be so successful. We should be optimistic but not get carried away. The reality is that our current crop of athletic are very competitive at the European level and excel there but at international level it is not so encouraging except was Jessica Ennis who may well be our only individual Gold in 2012. Maybe that only would be a great achievement.

In amongst all that there may be a couple of good points. I'm sure it wouldn't cost much for the rights to air the US, Jamaican, maybe Kenyan and Ethiopian championships in Europe. May write to eurosport to suggest or perhaps for one of BBC digital channels!!

yes , very good idea fatmanrunning.

i remeber last decade they had an athletics focus half-hour in grandstand hosted by roger black, for a general round-up. with the demise of grandstand and sportsnight , you dont get any of these updates, excdept for online.
by the way is transworld sport still going ?

it seems silly that at the start of every europa cup and uk trials a lot of time is wastedd talking before the start , and they cant even spend half an hour a week on the red button doing a general round up for athletics and other sports.

Hell yes! I think this calls for an actual petition, or at least facebook group since most organisations respond to overwhelmingly massive facebook group petitions!

I think the problem lies with how much gaps there are in the coverage (e.g. between jumps and throws). Watching the european cup I just got bored listening to the commentators going through start lists and previous results. Speed it up, more people will watch thus more athletics on TV.

We need more world class athletes too. We've got three or four who can challenge for world golds but they're low profile, except for Christine O. who is high profile in part for the wrong reasons!

I mean no offense - but I don't get what u mean sprintfan?
I think the problem with athletics and TV coverage is they either don't tell you when a meet will be showing and they don't have adverts on TV hyping it up like they do with football...they could start playing with rivalries and use that as marketing tools and advertising campaigns...FFS be creative TV companies!!
I mean it seems they're only interested in airing UK meets and a few golden league meets maybe on transworld sports but if someone was thinking straight they'd realise the potential in getting rights to air athletic meets and trials from major countries in the world as it would:
A) make some athletes who reach finals at least a little more known rather than people we see in the World or Olympic final and think 'who the ??'
B) Cement some healthy rivalries and build more anticipation for World's or Olympics
C) Get more people interested in athletics by rite of making it more popular

I have been a fan of athletics since the late seventies but I have to say that it has never been so boring as it is now. Bring back the shorter TV highlights programs. Remember the Osla and Bislett games shown on BBC2 in the early eighties? Some events (not involving British athletes) were pre-recorded and shown between the live events and this really kept the interest going. The program was only on for about an hour but it was far more exciting than the hours and hours we have at the moment. I usually Sky+ the live program and fast forward to the events.
