Ashes predictor by player comparison

All you have to look at is the player by player comparison to know the likely result of the Ashes:

Cook v Hughes - I would think Hughes has the mental edge over England before even facing a ball! Hughes

Katich v Strauss - Similar stats over the last year, but Strauss has his runs off flat pitches. Draw.

Bopara v Ponting - no contest, Punter all the way.

Pietersen v Hussey - here England have the edge.

Clarke v Colly - Clarke has been on fire recently, he easily takes this one.

North v Prior - Hard to say as an allrounder comparison. Draw.

Haddin v Freddie - Haddin has the batting edge and his keeping has been very good of late, but Fred has the x factor.
Freddie.

Johnson v Broad - even the most ardent Broad fan cant compare the two. Mitch has this one stitched up.

Anderson v Siddle - Sids stats are better over the last six months, Siddle has also faced the better opposition but Anderson has had the harder pitches. Draw.

Onions v Clark/Lee - Experience trumps exuberance in my eyes. Another for the Aussies.

Hauritz v Swann - well, I think for once England have the upper hand in the slow bowling stakes. I lived to see the day!

So the final score is:

Aus 5
Eng 3
Draw 3

On that basis I will predict 2 - 1 to the Aussies.

True

As a lark I compared with 2005 where England won

England Openers rocked in 2005

Trescothick > Hayden
Strauss > Langer

Vaughan < Ponting
McGrath skewering Vaughnny and Puntesr 100 at OT said it all

Pietersen > Clarke - no contest

Collingwood = Martyn close but both were not doing very well

G Jones <<<<< Gilchrist - even with Gilly failing

Flintoff >>> Katich no contest again

Giles <<<< Warne no explanation required

Harmision > Lee probably all down hill for harmy after that

Hoggard >> Gillespie or Kasporovich

This was England's great advantage and Aussies Achilles heel

Jones < McGrath only just as both were injury prone in that series

England 6
Australia 4
Draw 1

So slowie may actually have something going therre smiley

medium-pacer : Ah, come on mate.

There's no WAY you'd have rated them like that BEFORE the 2005 Ashes!

hindsight is a wonderful thing!

This ashes is going to be won by the team that shows the greater passion and belief.

Just as the last two in 2005 and 2006 were. And just as most sporting contests are, whenever the gulf in class between the two teams is not all that wide.

This is all pointless. The only fact that is relevant is the teams current test rankings:

Australia is NUMERO UNO

England is ranked FIFTH - just above the BASEMENT.

and there they will finish the series!

Ali Cook
Innings: 78
Phil Hughes
Innings: 6
How is this a draw. Fair Hughes has had a good start. But later in your article you say 'Experience trumps exuberance in my eyes' in favour of the Aussies so how does this not apply here?

Absolutely true Silk!

laugh

I was just proving slowie's hypothesis, we will only know who was in form and who performed after the series

That was a pretty poor comparison if I'm honest. Whilst your final result may be correct, I find some of your player comparisons debatable.

"Cook v Hughes - I would think Hughes has the mental edge over England before even facing a ball! Hughes"

What a truly unbiased and convincing argument, and it's only the first comparison. Hilarious stuff.

I've got another argument:

Cook v Hughes - I would think Cook has the mental edge over Australia before even facing a ball! Cook.

Easy this. Anyway I'll enjoy this garbage while it lasts. After all that 20/20 stuff I'm all excited now!

Come on England, let's kick bottom!
