Gouging WILL continue until.......

1. Idiots like De Villers are sanctioned for inappropriate comments such as "This is sport, this is what it's about. If things were clear-cut then we shouldn't even bother preparing for a game" - What sort of role model condones such behavior as being part of sport. Its sick. After PDVs comments earlier, he should keep his mouth shut and let people think him a fool that open it and remove all doubt.

2. The IRB and all governing bodies grow some balls and treat Gouging as the 'drink driving' of rugby and all players support their stance, ostracizing those who transgress. Peer pressure is key.

This wasn't an accidental contact with the eye area - this was an attack with malice. He worked the eye area for a number of seconds. How would Burger now feel if he had been successful in causing real damage?

And as for the idiot who wrote an article listing the NH players who had been cited for this offence. Two wrongs never justify a right.

And, as a PS, dont tell me that late challenges, rough housing, a punch, even stamping are in the same league and merit the same penalty. They are not and they do not. Gouging is an action which you can reasonably foresee will blind someone.

" the problem is largely caused by illegal immigrants and nefarious foreigners and is therefore not a British problem at all "

Pab, old man, a talent for what? Gouging will soon be illegal even in South Africa. Which it sounds is the land of the one eyed rugby supporters, probably due to gouging in the stands (only joking).

rucknroll, there is not a team in the world that he would not WALK into. even if the coach had as much resentment as you, he would not be able to justify not putting him in the squad. I think you need to go deal with some issues, one of them being letting go!

Are you trying to get me banned by the moderators? You managed to hack up my post to make me sound like some sort of Nick Griffin. I was simply trying to point out the spurious link between the article and the debate.
As Envoy pointed out, every developed country has underlying problems with violence. I don’t think anyone on here was trying to suggest that South Africans are more violent than Brits.
As for the game, which is what we were supposed to be talking about, there was violence from both set of players, Burger overstepped the mark.
Anyways this debate should be put to bed now.

Think you are forgetting that it is British and Irish Lions, so don@t say that the Lions/Brits don't like anyone who beats them in sport. Dirty play is just that and should not be allowed. As for today's spectacle with the armbands.......Please,
PDV should be relieved of his job and someone with a sense of sportsman ship and knowledge of safe play put in his place. For the coach of a national team to make the statement that he did......You lot can say what you want about BOD, but to the Irish he is the captain that brought home the Grandslam and for Leinster one of the pivotal players of the winning H. cup.
