Wimbledon - day seven

comment on the article

Morning everyone,

Big day today - the men's and women's fourth round. We have eight potential crackers in both draws, with Andy Murray v Stanislas Wawrinka an obvious highlight for many in the third match on Centre Court.

Elsewhere, I think Venus v Ivanovic first up on Court One could be good, Sela v Djokovic on Court Three might have the best atmosphere of the day, and Hewitt v Stepanek could be the surprise hit.

And I'm backing Murray in three, what about you? Let me know your thoughts...

"Andy Murray he is and he has some scottish roots but I have not noticed any sighn of the scottish accent."

doh

Murray has a standard Perthshire accent.

Perhaps you are expecting a Glasgow accent.

hoddles is completely correct with the accent thing. and murray HATES the english? so that's why he has been dating an English girl for years then, is it? Is he trying to eventually breed England out all on his own or something. Absolutely ridiculous comment!!

At the end of the day you can choose to support whoever you like. Unfortunately if it is for purely xenophobic reasons then the chances are all the arguing and debating isn't going to change your mind, or have any effect whatsoever. I wasn't a Henman fan and I think it was mainly due to the "them" and us thing. But i think (again I may be wrong) it is more a rich and poor thing than an English/Scottish thing.
Most Northern English people didn't relate to Henman at all but relate more to Murray because he seems more "normal". Tennis for years has been seen as an elitist sport but gradually it is becoming more appealing to the masses, with a little nod of the head to Murray's progress. The downside to that is the wider range of appeal means you are inevitably going to invite some opinions which are at best "INTERESTING"!!!

p.s can I just say Henman has really impressed while commentating with McEnroe and I Actually warm to him much more now than I ever did when he played. Preconceptions are horrible things

henman is a top lad end of story- i totally get your points though, i do feel nationilty(within the uk)is still a major factor in terms of support- but you have also made a very valid point about the class systems.

an example would be- ronnie osullivan probally got more brits playing snooker than davies and hendry combined- even though he is a little bit of a waster of talent- he is the common man that kids relate to..

when i mean kids i mean the bigger and poorer population of kids- which to be honest is the part of the country that needs role models anyway..

of course it would just be so much better if everyone from any backround just appreciated our stars irrespective of accent location or manor..

Andy Murray is Scottish, so English people should not support him. If he was "British" support England in the world cup.

Andy Roddick is my favorite player, if Murray is British then so is Roddick because England used to own America.

Murray has his own team to support in the World Cup - it's called Scotland, not England.

In tennis he represents Britain, not Scotland.

It isn't rocket science.
