Sky Team . .

Road cycling
comment on the article

The proposed formation of the Sky Team to compete in TDF & take on the best teams does seem like a natural step in many ways. Following the success on the track & alongside the current surge in road racing, check out any weekend sportive, is one & another I feel is as a country we are far more European in culture, thought & attitude. This is why I feel this team will slip into the main races & be competitive, of course the quality of the riders will help, but gone are the days of joining an obscure team abroad & making up the numbers to race at the highest level. Cavendish, Wiggins etc all know they will never command the attention of other major sportsmen in the UK but they will win races & have real respect from the top European pro riders. Good for Sky & lets hope the TDF comes back soon, oh there's another reason & move towards us being European the crowds at TDF in London 08. Great news & let's get Lance over here to start a stage of the Tour of Brit later this year.

Funny how both "Giro" and "Vuelta" are words in foreign languages but ok... gah!

'rouleur' is my favourite. There's not really an English version of it.

After some more reading it looks like the BBC miss-quoted Sutton perhaps as both Millar, Vaughters & Wiggo have laughed at the news apparantly?

BBC rules make no sense! The other day I had the word "nope" refused as likely to offend

My very favourite cycling word is sjas-patatten. It's when a rider is caught between a break-away and the peloton and he can't catch up with the guys in front of him and the peloton won't catch up with him.
The word itself doesn't really mean anything smiley

And I do think we'll have to wait til after the WC for real transfer dealings (with the odd exception probably).

We have a problem in the UK and that is the failure to recognise just how superb our top cyclists are.Last year Mark Cavendish won more stages in the Tour de France than any Brit before but when honours came, nothing.Already this year he's won stages in every major tour so far,yet still little or no recogniition by the media.Hopefully a Sky backed tour team will at last give these amazing cyclists the credit they deserve.Talk to most folk and to them the Tour de France is a drug ridden bore, instead of seeing it as one of the greatest and challenging sports events anywhere on earth.Gee,if this was soccer it would never be out of the press because other than Wimbledon fortnight or The Ashes that seems to be the only sport that exists.Come on British media get 100% behind these amazing and incredibly successful cyclists and give them full credit as national winning riders.Sure a British team would be great along with an emerging development squad of up and coming young riders, say under 18's so as we develop for the future as well.

Does anyone in their right mind expect Cavendish to jump ship from Columbia (the most successful team at the moment) to Sky??

Didn't think so...

The only problem I see is that I don't see anybody who is a genuine Yellow jersey contender? Will it be an all Brit team or will it be a British team with international riders>
