The Red Bull Rivalry

Formula One

Red Bull enjoyed their best weekend so far this season with a thundering one-two at Silverstone. Has their title campaign really taken off on the former airfield or will hotter climes on twistier tracks play back into the hands of Brawn GP?

Despite their headaches with tyre temperatures, Brawn still performed well; Rubens Barrichello was best of the rest in third and Jenson Button kept his cool to finish sixth after dropping out of the points positions at one stage.

Sebastian Vettel displayed incredible ability in the open air up front; it was reminiscent of Monza last year when the German never put a wheel wrong the entire weekend.

What's more surprising though is that Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber is only 3.5 points behind him after the German has won two races this season. The Australian has shown solid consistency, whilst outperforming Vettel in a few rounds, Turkey being the most notable example when team orders came into play. Webber may not have been able to touch Vettel at Silverstone but he hasn't made the big mistakes that have afflicted the young German on occasion, such as his slide into the barrier in Monaco.

I think this battle of young gun versus seasoned campaigner will be an intriguing test of nerve and wits.

Webber seems to have never done well at Silverstone in the past.

It looks like car issues.

When will RBR call team orders? If it takes Webber to ride shotgun if it looks like only Vettel can beat Button?

You can rest assured that team orders would have prevented Webber from overtaking Vettel if he had caught him up towards the end of the race.

No team is going to risk losing a 1:2 or even a 2:3 finish by allowing their drivers to attack each other as they would a competitor from another team.

It worked for Webber in Turkey and it would have worked for Vettel at Silverstone.

Interesting too that if it wasn't for only 1/2 points awarded in Malaysia and Sutil's blocking of Webber in Bahrain qualifying, Webber would likely be in front of Vettel in the WDC.

Goes to show how consistency really is a match for out and out speed.

Vettel and Webber are so close and there's little to chose between them, although Webber is getting stronger. Brawn, however, need to get behind Button if they want to win the championship. The car clearly suits Jenson's driving style and we're nearly at half way point in the year. If Rubens should get overhauled by one of the Red Bull drivers in the next couple of races, it's time to get serious.

If Webber is going to win the tittle he needs to sort out his qualifying performances. Vettel has outqualified him 7-0. I thought Webber used to be good at qualifying.
Also Vettel is a future champion, Webber is not. Vettel is the only man who can stop Button winning the championship.
