Fina approve controversial swimsuits

comment on the article

World swimming governing body Fina has approved a number of hi-tech racing suits that had initially been rejected for July's world championships in Rome.

Among those passed are the X-Glide and Jaked 01, used by Alain Bernard and Frederic Bousquet respectively in setting world records last month.

The emergence of some swimsuits in recent years had caused controversy because some experts, including some top swimmers, believe their use gives an unfair advantage in the pool.

Critics of the all-polyurethane suits claim the compression and buoyancy which results from their use, called 'air-trapping', helps boost speed. The old suits only had polyurethane plates.

What's your stance on the whole swimsuit issue?

can we ban anyone that has world class facilities and coaching as it is an unfair advantage

--------

The suit debate isn't really about it being an unfair advantage as often the suits were given out free anyway to most swimmers at world level.

It's more a point of it being a performance enhancer beyond acceptable limits in the sport.

That's why there are being banned.

Maybe all swimmers should go back to being amateur and training in 25 metre public pools.

So Foster can be a part-time postie and not train at Bath University where he has all facilities and support staff he needs.

training facilities do not unnaturally improve a swimmers performance.

Nor are facilities an unacceptable mechanical aid to performance.

Whether you have one in your country or not is a completely different issue to the suit debate. Everyone at world class level has access to the suit so it's about making swimming swimming and not powered floating.

I'm not going comment with with you any further about the difference between a good training facility and a mechanical aid during competition. It's clear enough what the suit argument is about

Perhaps you would compare having a world class velodrome with putting an engine on Hoy's bike?

I disagree, sadly this is a group of sad losers that are upset they can't worship the ground of Michael "Bob Marley" Phelps anymore. It is time to wipe the records- all of them. Start over. No clothing, no shaving and no swimming pools.

They should all swim naked, seems to me that's the only sure fire way of guaranteeing no advantages.

Plus swimming would become everyone's favourite sport.

Well technically by not wearing it, its dehancing their performance because what they wear now gives them more resistence...
make everyone wear the same suit - simple

agree with the point but "dehancing"? Ugh...

The difference between the swimmers ISN'T the point!

It's the Swimming world reacting to times being posted which are enhanced by the suits and not a true reflection of swimming.

It's a dislike of the suit and not a reaction to the difference between the swimmers.

This is pathetic - will we now argue about the boots that footballers wear, Skiers to go back to long skis? Why not go back to the suits used in victorian times, or wool if progress is not allowed.
If Mark Foster is so worried then why does he not put the suit on and prove what he's saying then we can make an informed decision such as:

a. They really do enhance and everyone should wear them to have a level playing field

b. Make it real swimming and get rid of the suits all together then there is no argument

I favour (b) ont he basis that if Mark Foster is right then it is totally unatural and false to swim with your dangly bits held in place - I don't see frogs or dolphins wearing suits
