Valentino Rossi. The best ever.

Moto GP
comment on the article

Of course there will be people who say otherwise, but, honestly, after that race, and that incredible performance by Rossi, can anyone seriously argue against Rossi being the greatest ever?

I'd love to hear from people who really know their stuff, especially about Schwanz, Doohan, Agostini and all the rest.

That last lap had me jumping up and down screaming. My heart rate went into the red. Utterly fantastic.

Brilliant but I still rate Laguna last year just above it. Took Stoner the rest of season to get over that although at least he has come back unlike Gibenau. Relative late comer to MotoGP but not sure how I missed out considering I haven't missed a Masters golf since 1985! Can't comment on the past because of that but do think there is always a desire in sport to name the current star as GOAT. Especially someone as charismatic as Rossi. He has a deserved place in the pantheon of great riders but trying to calculate greatness on the back of wins or poles or whatever is always flawed. Personally I particularly admire his longevity. In a dangerous sport it must be increasingly difficult to maintain the edge as a rider gets older and there is always another highly talented, fearless young pup trying to knock you into retirement. Rossi keeps seeing them off though.

I couldn't believe how close they came, awesome racing and definitely the best since Leguna last year. Bring on Assen.
I'd just like to give a nod to Dovi and wish Dani a speedy recovery, such a shame he can't get back to full fitness as I think he could have been in the running too otherwise.
3 leaders on equal points, this is shaping up to be the tightest, fascintating season in recent times.

"To avoid getting pulled again, try searching yourselves on youtube under the following:
"Kevin Schwantz Vs Wayne Rainey"
"Schwantz-Rainey Hockenheim 91"
"SCHWANTZ INCREDIBILE"
"Schwantz vs Rainey donnington(1991)"

----------------------

I can't get to youtube at work, but if the 1991 race is the one I have on my VHS tapes, watch for Kevin laying a line of rubber all the way around Coppice onto the back straight on the Penultimate lap - absolutely amazing stuff.

Is Rossi the best ever? I think so.

He's achieved so much in his Gp career, much like Ago and others, but did they have such good oppostion? Vale has fought off Capirossi, Biaggi, Gibernau, Hayden, Stoner and now faces Lorenzo for another shot at the title.
His performance on Sunday demonstrates that he still has the hunger to win and has lost none of his riding skill and craft. When he's criticised for mistakes or bad performances on track, he always manages to raise his game at the next race.
There's no coincidence that his name can be link to some of the best races we've seen in recent years, Jerez 05, Assen 07, Laguna 08 and now Catalunya 09.
I agree with others though - Schwantz was very entertaining to watch and Hockenhiem 91 was a brilliant race.

For now though Rossi IS MotoGP.

On Sunday I too was off my chair, unable to contain my excitement at the win. My apologies to the neighbours!

great race, although rossi is possibly the best rider ever, people shouldnt rule out anybody else just yet, but then again a high majority of MotoGP followers have the number 46 firmly tattooed on there behind.

valentino rossi is my far the greatest motorcycle racer ever why?multi world champ, record points haul, inferior bike transformed yamaha, weighs about 9kgs more than any one else, outside issues, new tyres i.e.bridgestones,most popularracer, etc, etc, etc,he is a MOTOCYCLE GENIUS, in 2007 he had a poor bike,2006 he lost by a thousandth of a second because elias pipped him in a race .

I very rarely watch motor sports but I happened to plonk down in an armchair and see the last six laps. Utterly rivetting. Graceful, powerful, exciting. What have I been missing ?!

Well after today's British Grand Prix I find it rather difficult to imagine how anyone would want to watch F1 over MotoGP. All of them strung out and no overtaking. I actually nodded off and went to do some vacuuming to wake myself up. Roll on the Dutch TT next week for some proper racing. smiley
