Federer still motivated by Masters 1000?

As Federer looks to break the record for number of Grand Slams won, i was wondering whether you think that he is still motivated by the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events? He has won 15 events i believe, 2 less than Agassi. Surely he would want to go on and beat that record? Also, Nadal is on 15 wins as well so i'm sure the two great rivals want to out do each other in that statistic.

On the other hand, breaking the record for the number of Slams is obviously most important to him, so at this stage of his career will there now be less focus on the Masters 1000? I'd be interested to know what you guys think. Just a final quick question - to what age could Federer continue to win Grand Slams in your opinion?

Sampras won slams until 31 yoa

Many people point this out but it's actually a very misleading stat.

Not at all - 3 slams 1999/2000/2002 - A fact.

Oops pressed send by mistake.

Thing is we just dont know with any champ when the final slam is won.

Federer's pretty fit and has had a remarkably injury free career.

I can certainly envisage success into 2010 and lets face it they are all a bonus now - its just how many he will bear the record by.

I think much will depend on Nadal's fitness as much as anything else and I can see a total of 16/17 now without straining too hard smiley

Federer is in the position to keep wrestling with Nadal for the record in Masters tournaments..... I see no reason why he shouldn't be motivated.

Besides, surpassing Agassi is motivation on its own.

Fed has the ego of a house so chasing every record in sight is of second nature to him... I certainly hope for tennis sake that Nadal sticks around and the likes of Murray, and Djokovic continue to challenge or beat him cause Federer dominating everything would be such a bore. Steffi Graf just spoke to the times online about her love for Rafael Nadal as a player, I'll post the link next. I wish all fed fans would realise that despite Roger being a great player there is more to tennis than just him, for excitement and drama tennis needs the likes of Nadal especially and the rise of Murray,Djokovic and Delpotro.

Federer is yet to surpass Rafa's record of "0" year end masters title.

atleast Rafito fangirls think 0 is better than 4 like in ranking no 1 is better than no 4

Well this is a Federer thread and you might just like to consider why you have to centre every single post of yours round Nadal ??

Sampras was 28 when he won that slam in 2000 and 27 when he won the slam in 1999.

Both of them were wimbledon which he managed to win while no longer being at his peak since he was that good on the grass due to his serve and it being a less physically taxing surface then. He was no longer no.1 then and in big decling during even those wins.

yep won in July and was 28 in the august so in terms of "closest to" in playing terms and time on tour you can add almost a year to both ages you quote.

In each case a year older bar about 5 weeks smiley

Federer will try to win Masters of course but main focus would always be slams. Its proven that he's much better at the grandslams (15 Masters, 14 GS???) so his H2H with Murray etc dont matter much IMO as its all in the 3-setters. I wouldnt bet on him chasing masters events and beating Agassi but as far as GS go, I think 3 more at least.
