Beautiful Barca

Champions League Barcelona
comment on the article

On Wednesday, Barcelona's beautiful brand of football faces the ultimate test as they go head-to-head with Manchester United in the Champions League final.

Barca will play the same way they have done all season - they will dominate possession, play short, sharp passes and wait for their moment to get in behind the United defence.

It is a style which has won them plaudits all year long, delivered a Spanish league and cup double and 156 goals in the process.

I spoke to former Barca star Gio van Bronckhorst and current midfield enforcer Yaya Toure to try and find out what makes the Catalans so special, with a particular focus on the creative hub of the team, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

So, can Barca outplay Sir Alex Ferguson's men in Rome and pass their way to a third European Cup win? Let us know what you think.

If the best team was to win, then the winner would be Barca. I mean, even blind men would admit that Barca play much better, and much more beautiful, football than Man Utd do. Barca are right now the prototype of attacking and beautiful football.

That's why, with still one game left in the Spanish league, Barca have scored 36 goals more than Man U this year.

That says it all.

Man U are a very good team as well, of course, but they play a much more defensive type of football. And their midfield can't match the genius that are Xavi or Iniesta.

With respect... thats absolute trollope!

Chelsea were absolutely robbed when they played Barcelona... absolutely robbed blind by a ridiculous referee, and they BATTERED Barcelona. Not with possession, but with chances and penetration. The only shot Barca had was in the 99th minute or whatever, when realistically they should have been 2 to 3 nil down.

Chelsea finished what, third? And you think Barca are the much better team?

So what if they have scored 35 more goals in their season! Can you name the last time a Spanish team butchered an English team in Europe (not including Boro vs Sevilla!!)?? Arsenal butchered Valencia, Liverpool Butchered Real Madrid, Chelsea butchered Barca (only for a ref to con them out of it), and Barca in their past meetings with Chelsea, Liverpool and United have been butchered butchered butchered!!

Yes - they are dangerous with players like Iniesta, Xavi, Etoo, Henry and Messi... but are United not as dangerous with Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov? You also forget that Abidal and Alves, first choice fullbacks are missing (imagine United without O'Shea and Evra tonight) and are playing Toure centre back (not a natural position). This could spell massive danger for them.

ram1ram (U8099826) - as many gifted players as Barcelona ?!!! Its comments like these that will get you laughed at.

Lets look at these gifted players:

Berbatov ? Overated and doesn't even play.

Rooney, so gifted he was mostly employed as a LB with Evra in the Arsenal game at OT, doubling up on Walcott.

Ronaldo, truly exceptional.

Tevez, workmanlike, hasn't been in the goals of late, hardly exceptional though.

Giggs, had his day, not exceptional anymore.

Park ? Do me a lemon.

Scholes ? Past it.

Ferdinand, yes, exceptional defender.

Vidic, not exceptional, made to look a mug by Torres.

Evra, made to look a mug by Lennon and needed help against Walcott.

Now lets look at the Barcelona players, well do I even need to, its a no brainer <doh>

Barca have Messi. He's been my favorite player the last few seasons. (I also like Robben.) However in both games against Chelsea he was poor. Ronaldo, in big games, makes a difference. I like Messi best, but Ronaldo, so far, has proved himself more valuable.

Barca have Iniesta. I like him too. However Man U have Tevez who you claim is just workman-like. You, like many, under-rate the mans talents.

I liked Alves too, but Malouda tore him up.

You don't like Berbatov. I think Henry is over-rated and not a good match for Barca. I like to watch Berbatov, because he's very deceptive. He looks slow, but he almost never loses possession. His skill is sublime.

Rooney has not lived up to his potential, but he's been very good this season.

Eto is a great goal scorer.

Eva and Alves both attack with equal threat. Alves does complement Messi, but both were neatralized completely by Chelsea both games.

Vidic and Ferdinand are both far superior to Barca's center backs. Vidic is perhaps the best in the world at his position.

Anderson, Park, Fletcher, Giggs, and Scholes compared to Xavi and who? Yaya..and what?

Anderson is going to be a very good player. Park is the workman you claim is Tevez. Scholes and Giggs can both still hold their own against...that's right Barca don't have an answer...they need everyone playing their best to match up to Man U...but wait...they don't...they are missing players...ooops

Let Barca win the possession and Man U win the Champions League. They won the possession at Chelsea but one shot at goal in 95 minutes, poor! more so they cannot be twice lucky. Thank God the referee is not a Scandinavian, no disrespect to the fantastic people. but twice chelsea have been victims of their awful officiating, the same team was the beneficiary, Barca. i'm for Man U today, at least to shame the Anglophobes. for my sake Man U is putting on white, the colour of unity, not red, up white!

You're actually crazy!!! Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov, Carrick, Anderson....... Don't just name Barca attacking players and Arshavin and compare them to United's Defenders! How does that arguement work!? United are every bit as good as Barca going forward with a better defence. Not saying they will definately win but if they play to their potential even if Barca do too i think United will do it becuase they are too strong.
Sorry, although I don't want to call you crazy I see in your comment that you only follow English football and therefore overrate United's players a lot. You named the following players:
-Rooney: good player but not better than his Barcelona equivalents.
-Ronaldo: in Barcelona would sit on the bench
-Tevez: would not make it in the Barca squad
-Berbatov: would sit always on the bench
-Carrick: would only get into Barca's amateur team
Anderson: also no chance in Barca's squad

I remind you that Henry (a god in the PL) was mainly on the Barca's bench for one season until he gained a place in the starting 11. Cesc (one of the best 5 PL players) was rejected by Barca and would only sit on the bench as he does in the Spanish team cause Iniesta and Xavi are superior players. Hleb, a regular player in one of the big 4, never plays at Barca. The same with Gudjohnsen. Barca has at the moment 10 times more quality than ManU whose players can only run with the exception of 2-3 really good players. No wonder that Barca, Liverpool, Fulham, Zenit etc owned them this season

you just named 5 world class players for Barca and one from United. And you're still probably surprised Manu were humiliated worse than West Brom were playing Manu. Admittedly barca were terrified of Ronaldo and rightly so.

The other ten they played with like toys with Rooney having a few good moments.

ram1ram (U8099826) - I don't think I need to say ANYTHING really, the result speaks for itself.

I named ALL the players who were poor and who were not. From my list the only one I got wrong was Ferdinand who Henry and Messi made mugs of.

Tell me more of this better defence Man U have, even a makeshift Barca defence couldn't get breached by Berbatov, Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez - all on the pitch at the same time <laugh>

World Chumps !

Barca outclassed Man U on the day.

I believe SAF got it wrong. I think we both saw the difference Tevez made. I don't understand a 36 year old Giggs getting 75 minutes and Tevez 45.

Pique was great. Everyone else did enough.

Iniesta and Xavi were a different class than Man U midfielders.

I continue with my opinion Henry does not fit Barca, and he's very over-rated with limited skills. He does (did) a few things very well, but he's not in the same class as Eto whose talent is also specialized.

Messi and Iniesta are truly greats...even if Chelsea totally shut them down.

ram1ram (U8099826),
Barca played yesterday worse than during the season but that's totally understandable since they had too many subtitutes in defence and Henry and Iniesta just came from injury (although Iniesta played well despite terrible pain in his leg). In addition, Messi is currently not at top form. Alves was terribly missed. With their regular defenders and a fit Henry and an in form Messi they have been much stronger during the season. Anyways, even under those circumstances, they outclassed ManU with ease.
