England v West Indies, the Riverside

International Tests
comment on the article

Given the furore surrounding Chris Gayle's rather ill-advised comments about Test cricket's future (or the lack of it in his hopefully isolated opinion), what do you think this Test holds in store for the languid West Indies captain?

Is this all part of some psychological masterstroke aimed at lulling England into a false sense of security, or are the enigmatic Windies about to be steamrollered again as at Lord's last week?

Would an emphatic 2-0 defeat in the Tests have repercussions for the one-day matches, or, given the comments from their captain, do you think West Indies regard themselves as primarily a limited overs team these days?

What about England? What represents a good week for them given that this is the final Test before the Ashes starts in Cardiff on 8 July? They have retained the same team and resisted the temptation to tinker with the balance of the side. Would you have done the same?

Please send in all your thoughts about the Test as the match unfolds.

MCG - Boxing day test - last Ashes series - Attendance

89,155 Test match Australia v England) Dec 26, 2006

What a quality effort from the Aussie crowds. Pity England didn't provide a contest. Who could forget Harmison's first delivery - missed second slip!

england shouldnt be playing the west indies there well below par and should be playing bangladesh.

Hold on ricardinhos, if I am not mistaken didn't England just lose the series to the windies earlier this year.

What short memories we have...

England's @ rses went that day, the second test crushed their morale and the rest is history.

Gutted it happened, but England took their eye off the ball after winning the ashes back.

No wonder Gayle is bored/upset this is worst most placid pitch I mhave seen vastly more bland than any of the West Indian pitches that England had a good moan about..... ooh there was a little less fuss then. Speak your mind Chris Gayle good on you, that is what cricket needs characters and excitment. Footballers are always talking to the press.

Couldn't agree with you more! I like 20/20 and enjoy 40 over 1 day and regularly travel from outside Edinburgh to England to watch. A good 5 day match is one which is to be relished smiley

or Pakistan were the better team in 2005 when Pak beat England 2-0 in Test Series & 3-2 in ODI.

Even Vaughan & Boycott admmitted Pak were the better team and deserved the applauds.

Also, will people stop mentioning Rashid. He is better left at Yorkshire. We need him more than England. Also give us back Tim Bresnan. He could make vital runs for us as well as take wickets. He is better used at Yorkie rather than being a wasted energy for England.

I really dont understand Gayle's thought. England should focus on the game and prepare for Ashes.

Judging by today it seems Test cricket is doomed. This game is obviously heading for a draw given the weather forecast. Seems England don't want to win each game just a series, and given there were only 2 games....not really a challenge.

I fear few will watch or even more important pay.

Said it before Test Cricket needs overhauling to attract crowds

There must be a winner - bin the draw option entirely (unless it's rained off only)

Introduce over rate minimums of 16 an hour & take runs off at 10 an over under that (every hour)

Have a maximum number of overs in an innings & then declare at where you are

Bin the fifth day - unless you lose time through weather only

That'll keep the game flowing & captains on their toes

Having said that the ashes will pull in the crowds - but every four years aint enough..
