So Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been named the 2009 Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. Congratulations!

You can't really argue or be surprised with the decision in awarding Gerrard this award. In 29 Premier League appearances for Liverpool he's weighed in with 15 goals & 7 assists. In the Champions League he's also been impressive on Liverpool's run to the Quarter Finals with 7 goals & 1 assist in 8 appearances. Very good return. We saw as recent as Saturday the value of Gerrard to Liverpool where he scored 2 goals in a 3-0 victory at Upton Park to keep the pressure on Manchester United in the race to the Title.

I was surprised that Nemanja Vidic didn't make the top 3 though, with Ryan Giggs & Wayne Rooney instead rounding off the top 3. Did our heavy defeat to Liverpool where Vidic found life so difficult against Fernando Torres & our coinciding blip weigh in on the decision of the writers? Probably. Ronaldo is top of the goal scoring charts again in the Premier League this season, however early season form due to injury & slowly finding his feet probably worked against him in these decisions.

Frank Lampard is another name I was surprised not to see in closer contention as he's had a fine season with Chelsea & was unlucky not to find himself in another Champions League Final. A constant in the Chelsea side this season he's started 36 games & netted 12 goals with 10 assists. Add to that a very good contribution of 3 goals with 5 assists in a Champions League run which saw them 2 minutes from the Final he could be considered unlucky not to have landed the accolade. A potential F.A. Cup medal may be just as rewarding for Lampard though.

There's so many names to pick from this season & there's a lot of writers with different opinions & their own preferences for their own reasons. It was always going to be a difficult choice. My own opinion was that it was between Gerrard, Lampard & Vidic - the outstanding players this season for the top 3 sides & should have been the top 3 choices. However, 1 of them won & I can't argue, I'm glad one has. Restores a bit of faith in writers out there. So yes, in my view, Gerrard was deserving. Do you agree?

i am a liverpool supporter so happy for gerrard, but he has been out for about 1/3 of the season so dont think he should have really go it.
vidic should have got the prize in my opinion, i think he is now the best defender in the world and isnt really getting recognised for it. . . the way he plays is inspiring and he should have won it.

Pity the writers and footballers do not look outside the big four - it is far easier to play well in a good side and these days few of them have to play anywhere near a full season.
Good to see we are not being afflicted on the back pages with another picture of a Man Ugly player - do they look for them on purpose?

How is rooney self centred? this is the bloke you'll play anyway to help the team and never complains about it. I'd agree Ronaldo is selfish but never waza!

I am just glad he didn't let any of his team mates distract him by trying to win the League, FA Cup, Champions league etc - fair play to him for bagging the trophy he wanted!

He definitely deserves the award, considering the gash squad around him and Torres, its testament to his brilliant season that they are where they are, and he scored well in limited appearances. Utd players don't deserve individual awards, Giggs shouldn't have won, Lampard deserves credit, for early season play. However Utd deserve all the team awards.
