Day One at the Badminton Horse Trials

comment on the article

“They’ve got balls, balls, balls.”

That’s how Katie Price - aka Jordan - described the riders taking on this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.

OK, she’s not exactly an expert on eventing (in fact she’s never ridden a cross-country course in her life), but she’s got a point. This is not a sport for the faint-hearted and Badminton is the toughest test there is.

Why was I even asking Ms Price her opinion on the course when this place is so full of equestrian legends? Lucinda Green, Ian Stark (who even said 'hello' - swoon!) and Lorna Clarke to name just a few of my eventing heroes I’ve clapped eyes on.

Well, Katie is a big fan of dressage and has a very pink and very successful equestrian clothing range and she was here signing autographs. Anyway she wants to start eventing and as a lady who doesn’t mess around, she’s now talking about doing her first event next month!

Crazy or brave? I like to think brave and I was actually quite impressed by her.

But there was just the small matter of finding her a horse. Luckily I’m a resourceful lady too and think I may have solved that problem... imagine that? My claim to fame could be finding Katie Price a horse!

Anyway on to the sport itself - the dressage. Well it was all about the wind, I’m afraid. It’s been blowing a gale in Gloucestershire all day and horses hate wind. If it gets under their tails even the most experienced riders can have problems and that’s what happened to several combinations here including Zara Phillips.

The world champion could only manage ninth place with 45.5 penalties going into Saturday’s cross-country phase. I watched her test and it looked "tetchy" if you know what I mean. Not as flowing as I’ve seen her do on the magnificent chestnut Toytown.

She told me she’s really disappointed and that a horse of Toytown’s quality should be higher up the order. But it’s not all over yet. She’s slightly more than eight points behind the leader - Belgium’s Karin Donckers on 38.8 riding her Olympic mount Gazelle De La Brasserie. Lucy Wiegersma and Shaabrak are just behind her for Britain on 39.7 and fellow Briton Oliver Townend is in third on the wonderful grey Flint Curtis.

So to Saturday’s cross-country course: several of the fences are maximum height. There are plenty of skinnies to catch the riders out and I predict we could have quite a few eliminations. It’s live on the BBC’s red button. Enjoy it and fingers crossed none of the riders are seriously hurt and all the horses get round safely. I’ll be reporting on BBC Radio 5 Live throughout the afternoon (when they let me get a word in between the football!)

If I have to here ... but she's an excellent mother one more time i'll snap. How do people know that? Also if i had the opportunities and time open to me I would be a decent level horseman. I'm going to be seriously supporting Lizzie Greenwood from now on.

What does any of this have to do with equestrianism?

Are the Z listers going to begin to ruin sport now?

I though after the first dozen rounds that the course was too easy for this level but interestingly the later riders seem to struggle with the time.
I think with all the accidents recently Hugh Thomas designed a horse friendly course that tested riders too that exerted just enough influence even if the time was maybe a shade easy.
Idalgo was the highlight for me - a really beautiful horse and super jumper.
Shame about Zara such pressure for her, looked to be coming into the SHogun Hollow a little quick but they were trying to get the time so an unfortuneate mistake.
For the sport worldwide I would like to see the Italian win as so many Brits have done it before and it would be a nice tonic to the seeming domination of GBR/France and the Oceanic nations.
Jumping should be exciting tomorrow field are very closely packed and there are some up the top end with rather dodgy SJ records.
Can't wait until I get to take my little mare there, hopefully next year if I get enough FEI points.

By all accounts Jordan is an expert at riding.
