John Higgins: All Time Best Match Player?

World Championship

Where does John Higgins sit in the all time greatest list?

Hendry - all time greatest winner
O'Sullivan - all time greatest talent

Higgins - ?

It's between him and Steve Davis for the all time greatest match player in my opinion. And this third world crown and the manner in which it's been done is surely a case for Higgins to be given the alcolade over Davis.

6 worlds v's 3 suggests this one could run and run like the Hendry v O'Sullivan debate.

Opinions?

'Charmer, TK's win was by far the highlight of the Crucible fortnight - unfortunately I can't access BBC video from the US. Is it on YouTube?'

It isn't on youtube Knowlesy. Let's just say that TK would have cleared in one visit blinfolded on these tables but had to try and make the frame close as he was playing a 13 year old and had to give him a chance to play a few shots. ok

IMO if you want to lay claim to being the "greatest match player ever" you need the title haul to back it up.

Higgins is in the top 4 but still isn't anywhere near Hendry's take so I wouldn't suggest he's the greatest match player. Great all round game for sure but not yet the greatest match player.

Knowlesy ok

I can only imagine if we turned the clocks back 25 years and had a semi final line up of Jimmy vs Kirk and TK vs Alex playing on these tables that there would have been lots of frame scores reading 147(147)-0. They would have had to employ a Quentin Hann style break because any red that was left pottable off the break and it would have been even money a maximum and the conventional break wouldn't suffice. I can imagine we would have been talking 80 or 90 maximums a tournament. David Vine would have had to introduce a highlights programme saying "We haven't got time to show all the maximums in this evening's session so here are just a few".

Sad to see Ronnie go out the tournament so soon, but Higgins is a great winner! He played some awesome matches with great come-backs and certainly deserves the title!
Back on topic: for me he ranks as "All Time Best Break-Builder", but that's just my opinion.

Enjoy the wins while they last, my English friends, because once Luca Brecel (14y now, reigning Euro Champ, and just beat White and Dogherty in Portugal) steps onto the scene, it's over with the UK supremacy... :D

That shows what a good guy Jimmy is - allowing a child to win a match.

before someone can be crowned as the greatest in any form of sport there are a couple of things that need to be established what do we mean by the greatest, the most successful, or the most talented, cause they are very rarely the same thing. I don't think that anyone would disagree that ronnie is by far and away the most gift cueist in any cue bearing sport including pool and billiards yet i DON'T THINK HENDRY'S achievements will be matched by anyone so how do you reconcile that fact. If the greatest is the most enjoyable to watch then i'm sorry hurricane then even ronnie is streets ahead but the man has issues and not the most stable temperament.

I have watched the snooker for about 25 years on the tv and still don't understand these terms.

Greatest talent
Greatest match winner.

People call Stephen Hendry the greatest player of all time to which I agree.

They also say Ronnie to be the greatest talent ever. What is talent? Some may say the abiity to win more tournaments. Surely all players have the talent to win.

Why don't people just say Ronnie is the second greatest player to play the game. The only reason is that it wouldn't sound good when introducing him to the crowds so they have to make up some title for him.

To say John Higgins is the greatest match winner is also another silly title. Surely all frames are matches and therefore again hendry is the greatest.

There is nothing wrong with calling Higgins the greatest tactician or greatest grinder in history.

Don't get me wrong I like Ronnie alot and have had the good fortune to meet and talk to him on many ocassions and have found him one of the most down to earth people if have ever met.

But to call him the greatest talent or greatest potential really is a bit of an insult to Stephen Hendry who has actually achieved the greatest so far.
