Referees

Premier League Liverpool
comment on the article

Here we go again, one of the big4 gets a soft decision which materially affects the course of a game. I support Liverpool but first of all am a football supporter. My point is NOT Utd's good fortune, its the fact that yet again a referee makes a decision which has a material affect on the game and its gone in favour of one of the big4, this time Utd but the other3 are just as favoured.

Its bad enough only 4 out of 20 teams having a realistic chance to win the league because of the monetary advantage these 4 have but add the problem of referee's perceived favouring of them, and the question for the rest is why bother?.

Question. Is the standard of refereeing better for it being a select group. In my opinion NO

Why cannot we return to having referees who only visit a ground ONCE per season, there are enough referees available to do that, and if you say you wont get the best referees for the best league, well I suggest, with exceptions, this group of referees is not up to scratch.

NO team gets the same referee twice at a home league game during a season.

it's zOkora, not zakora!!!

Fair comment. Although I think that the real decisive moment was bring Tevez on. I think it was only a matter of time before we scored, albeit had the goal been less contentious you could possibly argue that Spurs may not have crumbled as badly.

it's fair enough for Howard Webb to have made an honest mistake, and good luck to him for having had the courage to admit it. But...if he wasn't absolutely certain, he shouldn't have given the penalty.

At the time, without the benefit of slow motion and zoom Howard Webb made an honest and unbiased decision and should not be apologising for it. The rest of us see what our allegiances want us to see. If only the same fuss was made over Jagielka getting away with a penalty decision in the FA cup semi. Mike Riley apologise to Man U - No chance!

I cant also be bothered to read all the post but I Would like to point out a quote from howard webb - "I could see the Manchester United player touch the ball and saw him get clattered by the goalkeeper but didn't see the extra deviation from the goalkeeper's fingers touching the ball.

Now we all get replays, howard webb doesn't!
if any one of us saw what he has said he had seen i reckon out of a 100 of this post at least 75 would have given a penalty

How quickly your memories fade of the FA cup semi-final penalty that wasn't awarded against Everton. If there are a higher number of penalties for top teams, it's a statistical effect as the top teams put opposition defences under the most pressure. This article is hogwash.

I support Liverpool and we have benefited from poor penalties and more than one questionable sending off in the past 12 months. The top teams definitely get the rub of the green. I would COMPLETELY disagree with Nosdevil's view that 75 out of 100 people would have given the penalty. Am I the only person who finds it a bit peculiar that neither Howard Webb "didn't see the extra deviation". Extra deviation? The ball came off Gomez at right-angles to Carrick. Would, for example, West Brom have got a penalty at Old Trafford for the same encounter? I think not.

Pompey fan here. The notion that top teams are given more penalties is statistically true, but that doesn't mean that they are not deserved. Better teams generally get fouled more, and spend more time in the opposition box. This is a fact.

Also, A good team would have taken the Webb decision as a negative but still won the match 2-1. At worse it might have been a 2-2 draw. The fact that tottenham conceded 4 more goals after the penalty shows their lack of mental strength and tactical nuance. Anyone who says that tottenham only conceded 4 goals because of a bad penalty decision is trying to deflect blame from what is just a far worse team than Man Utd who got totally outplayed over the course of the match and deserved to be beaten.

Well said popefridge. One penalty doesnt change a game. If people say spurs lost because they couldnt believe the ref gave the decision then the do not have the mental strength to be amongst the best in england.
