IPL to be played outside India

Twenty20 England
comment on the article

The Indian Premier League will not be held in India this year. The clash with the Indian general election has meant the government are unable to guarantee adequate security for the IPL matches and so now the tournament is being lined up to take place in another country. South Africa and England have been touted as possible options.

Although the BCCI are actively seeking an alternative venue is this a feasible option given the tournament is scheduled to start in less than a month (April 10th)? The IPL lasts for a month and a half and will require significant planning to run smoothly. Surely it’s too late to expect another country to hold the IPL with such limited time available before the tournament begins?

Should the IPL be moved to another country such as South Africa or England? Or should the tournament be cancelled or delayed to later in the year to allow time for a properly organised tournament?

What do you think?

Sorry if I sound a bit ignorant here, I don't really follow the IPL, or indeed cricket in general, but I wondedered if someone could answer a question for me.

When a franchise bids for a player (e.g Kevin Pietersen i heard was bought for £1.1m), does the money go entirely to the player, or is there some other organisation that also profits, such as the Indian Cricket Board?

Hi,

KP was bidded for $1.5 million (same as Flintoff) and is the expensive player this year. IPL will last for around 6 weeks, for which he'd get $1.5 million. However, because KP's only managed to get 3 weeks off from ECB (England's cricket board), due to other commitment of representing England in internatinal matches, he'd have this $1.5 million docked to around $700,000. He'd be paying 10% of it to ECB (or his club) and the rest will be his own. He may have to pay the tax on it, I'd imagine.

I would recommend Dubai over England but that is a personal choice. I feel in order for the intensity and anticipation to remain by the T20WC the IPL tournament won’t be an ideal scenario making matches overloaded and affect the audience’s interest in at least one affair. Also one shall consider venue shortages due to county cricket and the unpredictable weather conditions.

Cricket in England in early April? Not a bright idea. Smacks of business men with lack of bright ideas and little knowledge of cricket. Let them play it in SA.

I love all forms of cricket, but i have absolutley no interest in the IPL at all.
It is just a league of manufactured teams with no real identity.Who cares if Team D is playing Team F.Not me.
If the tournament was played in this country,i would not go to watch a game, even if it was free entry.
And i think i am not alone in these thoughts.

Has to be SA. Their pitches are perfect for it after the summer weather.

Glad they picked SA!!

England would have been a disaster both in terms of weather as well as lack of effective organisation.
