Teams challenge F1 scoring system

Formula 1's teams claim the new scoring system introduced earlier this week is not valid and cannot be used in 2009.

They argue that the changes, which stipulate that the driver with most wins will become world champion, did not meet the necessary regulations.

F1's governing body, the FIA, announced it was amending the scoring system in order to make racing more exciting.

But the Formula One Teams Association (Fota) said it "unanimously agreed to question the validity" of the decision.

"It is too late for FIA to impose a change for the 2009 season that has not obtained the unanimous agreement of all the competitors properly entered into the 2009 Formula 1 Championship," read a Fota statement, issued on Friday.

More to follow.

I hope they succeed :-)

The scoring system isn't broken! I haven't met a single fan who thinks this medal scheme is a good idea - if it does end up being implemented, it'll just go to show that Mr Ecclestone has far too much power and influence for one man.

Bernie's quite right about Lewis finishing second in races he could and should have won last season. Belgium for example. Until the FAI introduce full time professional marshalls for all races to ensure consistant decisions throughout the season there is still the potential for genuine, edge of your seat racing action to be penalised. If a driver suspects a move may result in his being stripped of his victory post race, will he not be less inclined to attempt it?
Had Lewis not been stripped if that win and taken the other two Bernie alleges he could have then the title could have been wrapped up by Brazil. Then that GP would have merely been a procession - ultimately robbing the spectator of breathtaking last lap drama

Bernie, if those in F1 could be as united about something as fans are on these medals, there would never be any problems ever!

Scrap this stupid medals idea now. Award more for first, no problem, but the season counts too.

Oh, and I eagerly await the next live TV/Iplayer broadcast of the pre-qualifying session...

Am I the only one that reads anything into the look on Bernies face in photos accompanying his comments about his stupid medal system not being used this year. He looks just like the typical spoiled brat that's not getting his own way. "It will happen next year" sounds like a threat to me. Personally, F1's rules and regulations have gotten so daft as to have sploiled it anyway for me, the points sytem should never have been altered to lower the gap between first and second and it should now be increased to something like the system MotoGP use. It's high time Bernie was happy just raking in the millions and left the racers to get on with racing.

Again Bernardinho demonstrates his total disregard for any opinion other than his own.

The current points system has produced two consecutive seasons in which the championship was decided in the final race. What more could we want? Why does Bernie insist on fixing something that isn't broken?

What is the advantage of awarding medals instead of trophies? Formula 1 is not the Olympics. Again we see a complete lack of regard for tradition.

Bernie is certainly old enough but apparently not wise enough to know it is inappropriate for him to comment on which driver(s) he favors while he is in a position to regulate the competition.

What will it take to bury this fossil?

Does anyone know how the medal system would or would not affect the revenue entitlements of the teams currently based on the points system?

The fact is that a guy who finishes every race in second place deserves the chamionship more than a guy who finishes first in half the races and puts his car into the wall in the rest.
