International England

Any thoughts on the upcoming England squad and formations.

Been thinking about this and it'd seem with the players England have at their disposal that 4-2-3-1 set up would suit the players we have and utilise their strenghts.

My line up and squad for the Slovakia friendly would be

..............Kirkland..............

..Johnson..Terry...Ferdinand..Cole..

..........Gerrard...Barry...........

......Rooney...Lampard...Young.......

................Davies...............

David James
Paul Robinson

Phil Jagielka
Stephen Warnock
Gary Cahill
Matthew Upson

Mark Noble
Shaun Wright=Phillips
James Milner
Matty Taylor

Gabriel Agbonlahor
Michael Owen

Doogal you may be right but surely Vela is the same, better technically has shown he can finish so why is he not being given a decent run in the line up (considering Bendtner has not had a good year)
-------------------------------------

The problem we have is balance. Id put our strikers into groups of technical ability like so:

Left footed, Tecnhical, Skilled Strikers = Van Persie, Eduardo and Vela
Right footed, Tall, Good in the Air Strikers = Adebayor and Bendtner

Im not saying this is how Wengers puts them, but putting that into consideration and playing two upfront, that just leaves Bendtner from the second group.
I wouldnt play with two from the same group upfront,as it doesnt balance.
I think Wenger is trying to mould Vela into a Walcott type player but on the left. I may be wrong. Just my theory on things lol. smileyale

The reason he is so effective there for Liverpool is because he has Torres in front of him. Torres is constantly making intelligent runs making space for himself and Gerrard. He also has bags of pace, and is probably the best finisher in Europe, that is what makes him so dangerous. It also makes Gerrard a better player and more of a threat when attacking.

England do not have a player like that. Rooney is a very intelligent player and will make good runs, but he doesnt have the same pace or finishing ability as Torres. Agbonlahor has great gas but doesnt always make the right runs and is nowhere near the finisher that Fernando is. Then the rest of Englands options are target men really, and i dont think Gerrard would be as effective working off knock downs and scraps provided by someone like Heskey.

good point ...

but gerrard is probably the best finisher in that england squad...regardless of whether he is a mf or a cf...so we should take advantage of that...

we have many players who can grind it in midfield and when ball and play square passes (see barry, lampard, carrick)

Baines has done some really good work for us, this term, paired up with Steven Pienaar - a pacy and bright LM - Young is in the same vein and I'd very much like to see what Baines & Young could do down the England left. Shame Young isnt in the squad.

Baines is very good on the overlap and can put a decent cross over too. well worth a half at least.

Left to right:

Foster/James

Johnson
Ferdinand
Terry
A.Cole

Walcott
Lampard
Barry/Carrick
J.Cole

Gerrard

Rooney

Capello must make this system work for the World Cup. It incorporates all of our talents. There is no reason why he can't play Gerrard behind Rooney (like Benitez does for Liverpool but with Torres). Lampard is too good to leave out. Walcott is such an important player for us - IMO he has the potential to be magical in South Africa. If he gets this right, and Rooney doesn't get sent off, we will win WC2010.

- i like your team to be honest. The only other issue is whether or not Rooney will be suitable in that all out striker role. Although there are a few good strikers England could have on the bench if it isn't working.

The team will be:

-----------James---------

Johnson--Terry--Rio--Cole

------Barry---Lampard----

Lennon------------Gerrard

----------Rooney---------

---------Heskey----------

With Lampard and Barry holding, allowing Gerrard licence to roam and cut inside.

Rooney will operate a free-role behind Heskey.

Not my preference, but a free-roaming left midfielder is better suited for Gerrard than a right-wing position.

Personally, I'd have this:

-----------James---------

Johnson--Terry--Rio--Cole

------Barry---Carrick----

Lennon----Gerrard---Young

---------Heskey----------

With Gerrard given a free-roaming position and Rooney sat out. But I wouldn't have minded Lampard instead of Carrick, if the lad can show the discipline to hold.

I like Rooney, BTW - just think a team should only have one free-roamer, and Gerrard is on better form.
