England women qualify for Super Six

England
comment on the article

Five wickets for Laura Marsh, an easy win for England, 100% record.

They can't be stopped can they?

Fortunately, Charlotte Edwards is far too savvy to promote the team as models. They're there to play cricket & who cares what they look like (given "plain smart"), as long as they bring home the silverware?

Last night's game could have been tricky. So-called walk-overs often are. Not much has been said yet about Edwards's captaincy, but it's been spot on so far; off the field as well as on it. England rested Gunn, Shaw & Guha last night and gave opportunity to Rainford-Brent, Marsh and Shrubsole.

We now know that Marsh took full advantage and probably secured her place in the team to play the all-important match against the Ferns on Saturday, where we MUST keep the likes of Satterthwaite & McGlashan in check. Both Shrubsole and Rainford-Brent will have been happy to get a game, although Shrubsole was somewhat expensive and Rainford-Brent lost her wicket going for a big hit. They'll be back.

And just think, folks! The multi-talented Rainford-Brent gave up athletics, football and basketball to concentrate on cricket. That's enormously encouraging, I'd say.

Meanwhile, SC Taylor and Atkins were more or less rested, as neither was called on to bat. Sharp thinking again from Edwards to give herself and Greenway a chance at the crease, out of their usual batting positions.

FleetJackHobbs:

There has been some promotion of the team. There’s no need to promote them as models but those shorter-sleeved England tops were one move. The desire for greater photo opportunities is merely a personal thought designed purely to please me!

One noticeable difference between the male and female game is that innovative ideas are far easier to introduce into the women’s game due to the comparative lack of ‘tradition’ compared to the male spectrum. Personally I think the England male team could learn a lot from the way the female game has improved.

I thought the English spinner had a very good loop, and was not afriad to give air.

About Jenny Gunn though, I felt her action is somewhat suspect. She seems to stop at the crease before she delivers.

ks,

From all I've read, Gunn has been cleared to play in this tournament. Everyone knows her action has been questioned and that matters are officially in hand for full scrutiny AFTER England's final match in Sydney. My opinion is that it does not help England's cause to harp on the matter DURING the tournament.

Of course, I understand that not all posters want to help England's cause. Viva the competition AND the backchat! smiley

Buenas, Jack, life is interfering with my appreciation of the game at the mo, very bad. NZ and England at the tops of their groups, Aus winning but not as convincingly as your lot and the bracken. Seems they have peaked too soon, Stars to shine in the Super Sixes. Gunn was reported during the tournament as well, get that sorted quick, or else, throw the ball to a shrub!

hey, Stroller, Sorry to hear of "life" problems. Ditto here. Life interferes with cricket.

As I write, there's half an hour to go to Eng. v NZ. I'm nervous. It keeps running through my head that SC Taylor has to fail once - and that Mason has to fire once. I do so hope that neither happens tonight.

I'm predicting nothing - although I'm hoping like mad we trample the bracken underfoot. ˇClaro!

Clash of the Titans for sure, a toss-up perhaps, but Claire looks to be in superb form and Tiffen, not so much. Watch those little cricinfo lines carefully, you could be watching a finals preview.

The bowling seems to be letting the Stars down, I'm hoping they fire as the tournament gets to the pointy end, cmon, Sampson!

Well, well, well, Stroller! - Like.... Why did Rolton jump half way down the pitch to Sultana, of all bowlers? What's happened to the all-round threat that was Perry? - I'll say no more...

... Except one wee snippet I picked up from the Aussie broadcasting unit on Yahoo! - Firstly - Goswami was terrific last night. It might not seem so from the figures, but she was. - And guess what! - She was coached by Dennis Lilley - so you have only yourselves to blame! smiley
