Time to drop Cook

International Tests England

There is a myth going round among England fans that Alastair Cook does not deserve to be dropped. I would question that myth.

Half of it seems to be that he keeps getting half centuries without getting hundreds, and that is good enough. Well allow me to show you this...

0 - 2
1-9 - 8 (1 not out)
10-19 - 7
20-29 - 2
30-39 - 4
40-49 - 3
50-59 - 4
60-69 - 7
70-79 - 1
80-89 - 1
90-99 - 1
100+ - 1

Those list his innings scores since he scored his penultimate hundred, a score of 106 at Old Trafford against the West Indies in July 2007. His solitary hundred is that one in Galle 15 months ago.

It can be seen from that that of the 41 innings since that moment, he has passed 50 on 15 occassions. 37.5% of his innings have been fifties. As such, it can be seen that the notion that he is somehow regularly scoring half-centuries and then getting out is largely unfounded.

The other idea with Cook is that because he is young we ought to stick with him. This, I'm afraid, is a remarkably dim approach to team selection. You should pick your team from the eleven players most likely to win you matches, and the fact is that with figures like those listed above, he is not batting in a way which would win England many matches.

My personal choice for his replacement is Paul Horton of Lancashire. He has a higher career first-class average than Cook, averaged 11 runs more in the County Championship last season than Cook managed at Test level, despite 11 innings against New Zealand. Some people moan that it would mean dropping an experienced test player for a rookie. Well, how else do you bring new players into test cricket? If you worked on that principle, we wouldn't be playing Pietersen, Strauss, Broad, Prior, Anderson or Swann, as we'd have persisted with Thorpe, Hussein, Harmison, Geraint Jones, Hoggard and Giles or Panesar. And I know which set of players I prefer...

Cook has several technical flaws in his batting, notably a weakness against a swinging ball and on the hook. This often leads to him giving his wicket away, either by edging behind or playing silly shots as he did today. Let him go back to Essex, play a full season while not having his flaws emphasised by the Aussies, get some runs under his belt (maybe even the elusive hundred, who knows) and then have him back in confidence for the tour to South Africa next winter.

So Key should be in the team because of his 200?

You mean, pretend it was a joke to save face after screwing up?

He has been pretty consistent of late, the only criticism would be the conversion rate.

Not in India, lol. And now he is batting on roads. Many players are racking up runs. Many more than Cook.

Though yes, his poor conversion rate has been consistent, as has his poor strike rate.

Anyway, girlie, it's been fun as always, but I'm off out now. Have fun, play nice, try not to get into too many scrapes.

Cook was ina 200 opening partnership

That does not happen everyday

===========================

Maybe not, but it becomes a lot more likely on a flat pitch against a poor bowling attack, where only oe of the bowlers is offering anything to trouble the batsmen?

I'm not saying it devalues it, what I am saying is that it's a bit of an anomaly, not to be taken as a rule.

As to the comments regarding "he's just scored 94", my points about his technique are what caused him not to go further. And I've been mentioning them for some time, indeed before the start of this tour.

Cook is a cornorstone of Eng future - that gives him a long leeway - much like the tolerance shown to Clarke or Yuvraj - they will lead batting attacks and needd to get more experienced in Tests

He probably is, but that doesn't make him immune to being dropped for a while to sort out his flawed technique and his mental problems, surely?

And if it does, then why are we sticking with players who would improve by going away from Tests to work on their game? As it damages both Cook and England's developments.

agreed dropping builds chracter and not a bad thing for Cook at this stage - will make him set higher targets coming back. His footwork and pulling seem to be the areas toimprove and he should play much more FC than say established players like KP and Strauss

I dearly would like to see Denly or Horton carried in this side as a third opener - unless Vaughan can make a comeback
