Pakistan will not host Champions Trophy

One-day internationals
by Pranav Soneji (U5268639) 01 February 2009
comment on the article

The 2009 Champions Trophy will not take place in Pakistan after the International Cricket Council decided to seek an alternative venue for the tournament.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cri...

The event was postponed last year after a number of teams expressed doubts about security issues in the country.

And India's withdrawal from a three-Test tour meant the future of the competition following government advice effectively ended any hopes of the tournament going ahead in Pakistan.

The ICC has reassured the cash-strapped Pakistan Cricket Board that it will receive revenue from the tournament regardless of where it is held.

However, which country board would host a tournament knowing that not all of its revenue would be going back to the organisation?

Was it inevitable the ICC was going to move the tournament away from Pakistan? Which countries would be in the running to host the 2009 tournament?

Let us know your thoughts.

In another example of a "Muslim" terrorist having one set of rules and a non-muslim in this case "Tamil" terrorist having another set of rules the Champions trophy is being played in Sri Lanka!! The PCB is a gutless, toothless organization just like the Pakistan govt. Instead of being apologetic the PCB should tell the ICC to go hell. Resign and just focus on raising the standard of its domestic cricket. Let cricket get even more insular than it already is. The ICC has to be the most dysfunctional organization in all International sport, the only good thing is its in a sport few people care about other than those that live in India, SL and Australia. The English prefer football the South Africans and Kiwis, Rugby and the West Indians, Basketball or any other American sport. Thanks a lot ICC for playing your role and "promoting the sport". NOT!!!!!

Also some of the response on this page is pathetic. Idiots who say things like "stop blowing up bombs if you want cricket to be played in your country" are obviously unaware of the fact the more Pakistanis die from those bombs then anyone else! These are probably the morons who believe Gazan children should die because Israel imprisons the Gazans and in response Hamas fires tin cans rockets into Israel. Get a life guys, this is not black and white. By condoing actions like the ICC's decision you simply increase the perception of a West vs. Islam confrontation and the more you do that the more chances are that all of you on this forum and I will get caught in the cross fire. This was a stupid, poor decision by the ICC, further isolating Pakistan is not going to help the war on terror it will only increase it.

This is just teh most pathetic handling of a the affiars of much loved game. Pakistan who have produced great names like Imran Khan, Fazal Mahood, Javed Maindad and Wasim and Waqar, the list goes on and on... Most people in india are heating up the political debate to deprive pakistan and isolate it in all ways.
If SL can play happily then why cant other teams...after all ENG just played in India after bombs went off in mumbai!
This biased approach is pathetic and appauling and ICC have no control of the game anymore.
Who are MCC and when did they ever come into exist as Saviours of Laws of Cricket.
Also reverting the 3rd ENG V PAK test decison, ICC's accpetance of their view should also REVERT decision of ALL TV REPLAYS as well that were incorrect etc.
ICC's "certain charming exec's" should be held responsible for bringing game in disrepute...not poor players who MAKE the game!

This is just the most pathetic handling of the cricket affiars. Pakistan who have produced great names like Imran Khan, Fazal Mahood, Javed Maindad and Wasim and Waqar, the list goes on and on... are deprived of their very right to freely enjoy competitive cricket.

Most people in india are heating up the political debate to deprive pakistan and isolate it in all ways. Thats should do them a world of good! Shame on them.
If SL can play happily then why cant other teams...after all ENG just played in India after bombs went off in Mumbai!
Greedy players went on to play league matches in india last year went troubles carried on!

Having "English Chairman (MCB) obviously explains the reverting of the 3rd ENG V PAK test decision, ICC's accpetance of MCC view should also REVERT decision of ALL TV UMPIRE decisions challenged as well that were incorrect etc.
ICC's "certain charming exec's" should be held responsible for bringing game in disrepute...not poor players who MAKE the game!

And PCB gets some MEN ! who know how to shut up racist people like D.Hair and his supporters.

This is the worst use of logic I've ever seen. Sri Lanka played happily in Pakistan? No dude, they went there for political reasons and they nearly got killed. Even after that terrorist attack, if you still want all other countries to come to Pakistan and play there.. Shame on you!

And what do you mean by greedy players? Playing is their profession, and if they see an opportunity to play competitive sport and earn money at the same time.. they'd go for it. Who are you to pass comments on them? Remember that we live in a free world.

The Champions Trophy is a waste of time....

It should be downgraded to a 20/20 competition. 20/20 is drawing bigger crowds.

Good decision.

If only uefa could do the same about the champions league final in Rome!

The ICC Champions Trophy is the most ludicrous trophy in cricket!

It is just a poor replica of the World Cup, and is purely done to generate profit that to prove who is genuinely the best team in the world.

This tournament should be replaced with the World 20/20 Championships, so every two years there is either a World Cup or 20/20 World Championships.

This purely money making tournament just demeans the other two major tournaments.
