What is the future of Womens football?

Womens Football England

With the Womens Professional League in America due to kick off at the end of March, there is talk that many of the top womens players in England will move there to play. Lets face it, they get paid a proper wage and are watched by far bigger crowds than here so I can't really blame them. Karen Carney of Arsenal has already gone and there's rumours that Kelly Smith and others will follow.
I think this will be a major setback for the development of womens football in this country, but may make the national team stronger as the players will be competing at a higher level.
What would you do if you were in their position??

Women football-players?????? Now there's an oxymoron if ever I saw one?

Sad to see Kelly go- I've watched her several times, and she's a great player- but I have no doubt that she'll flourish in the States, so good luck to her.

The womens league here is ridiculous. As an Arsenal fan i'm glad it's our team that wins everything every year (wish the men would..) but look at the table - Arsenal Ladies have won 13 out of 13.

2 seasons ago they won the quadruple (all domestic cups plus europe), most seasons they at least do the domestic double. So anyone saying it's a step back for women's football and the England team for them to leave is wrong. They might actually get a proper game out there - losing every once in a while and playing against people better than yourselves isn't altogether a bad thing, it leads to improvement.

It's so great reading the chauvinist statements that Women's football has no future and blah blah blah. Maybe you all just need to see it done right... or is it because it's the Americans doing it right then it must be absolute rubbish? Last time I checked, instead of just whining about how horrible it is, the Germans and Brazilians went out and got in the game themselves. Maybe the FA should take a hint, perhaps?

Womens tennis is only thought of as well attended because at the grand slams you buy a ticket at a court, they then put lens and womens matches on the court. In reality, interest in the womens game is superficial, they only get equal prize money to shut femminists up.

Regarding womens football, it is a joke - plain and simple. The Spartans womens team (second in Scottish top womens league) were beaten 5-1 by my sons U14 team, the reason people won't pay to watch it is becUse the standard is so low.

When will someone sue the FA, having banned womens football in the 20s or 30s because it was getting huge crowds, they now have a rule preventing girls and boys playing together in any registered side when they reach a certain age.

With millions of pounds being given to 'grass roots football', every penny should go into the womens game as there is already enough money (most would say too much) in the mens game.

When Charlton Athletic got relegated from the PL the first thing to go was the womens team at an annual cost similar to 1 highly (over)paid player.

Equality, my arse

Invest less than 1% of the amount in boys football, in the womens game and all English sides (club and country) would compete with and regularly beat the best anyone else can offer.

The recent youth World Cups in New Zealand and Chile proved there was natural talent out there, it just needs nurturing and some investment.

KING111

laughlaughlaugh Love your example. Feel sorry for your son's team having to endure the fixture.
Can't say too much though, might get called chauvinistic pigs by all the women, just because we disagree with their oh so modern ideals and opinions.

Okay - I like watching Arsenal Ladies. There. I said it.

I've been to a few Women's Prem matches and yes - some of you small minded biggots are correct when you say it's nowhere near the standard of the mens game - in the same way that the England Men's Netball team is nowhere near the standard of the womens team.

But - you don't see any overhyped, overpaid precious little nancyboys falling over at the slightest touch. You get to see honest football. Honestly bad at times - but honest nonetheless. If the only thing that qualified you as a football team was the fact that you were brilliant, we'd have only about 6 teams in England - not 92.

The last game I went to, anyone who wanted to was able to have a one on one chat with Faye White - England captain - at half time. Now can you do that with John Terry at the Bridge easily?

As an Arsenal fan, I'm gutted that the heart of our team has gone - but I guess we can't complain as we haven't had a league defeat for something like 4 years now. This will make things more competitive if nothing else.

I do though object to the way this was done. The US teams held a draft, where they basically took turns to pick the world's best players out of a hat - for the right to start negotiations with those players. This was done without the permission of the players' clubs.

If this isn't tapping-up, then what is? The sheer level of arrogance is astonishing. With the levels of money involved certainly no English-based player can be faulted for having their head turned.

Okay so all you men who have never witnessed a womens game may be quick to rubbish the quality of their leagues, games and players. But, having witnessed a quality cup game between Sunderland WFC and Bristol Ladies my opinion of the womens game has changed quite largely.
The game ended 4-2 to sunderland (aet) and the goals in the game which were scored were of such high quality, even ronaldo would have been proud.
Now you may say that its easier for women to score goals against each other because they pose no physical threat, but in all my years of watching the game i have never seen 2 teams of players giving their all and throwing themselves into challenges as i saw yesterday.
It was a truely brilliant game.
If i could give you one piece of advice it would be to go watch a womens game for yourself, and whatever you do, don't sit there and compare it to the mens game, because your being ridiculous. But watch the individual and team skill some of these women's teams possess. Watch the grit and determination the women have for the game, and compare it to the likes of ronaldo who couldn't care less. As long as he's on £100,000 a week he's fine.
And just remember, these women probably would of had to pay a signing on fee to the club and don't get paid a penny back. They play for their pure love of the game.
One last point, England men? A team of individuals who can't be bothered to play for their country because their clubs are the ones paying them.
England women? A group of players who graft hard together, going weeks at a time away from their families to play in games and tournaments of which they wont see any rewards.
England womens U17s, 4th best in the world
England womens U20s, top 8 in the world

Well said mate..i watch the Arsenal ladies every chance I can.. loads of goals,,high work rate throughout the team..prematch warm up about 60mins before the game..plenty of time to talk to the supporters aftre the game.. no prima donnas..good HONEST football..no whinging, diving and all that rubbish in the mens prem league..so whats the problem?Give me an honest game of football any day. The FA have no idea what theyre doing with the mens game so the women have next to no chance. But while its here enjoy it!
