Dean Richards - Coach of the YearHarlequins by Moneys Too Tight (U10781719) 17 January 2009 What a muppet!!! Unbelievable decision to replace Evans with Malone at a critical moment in the game. Here's hoping Quins lose every game for the rest of the season so Richards can get the sack! Malone and Quins went to pieces the moment Malone missed that kick. Champagne Harleys (U13786495) posted Jan 17, 2009 I agree, from the offset it was completely bizarre. However Dean Richards has put together a generally very exciting team so is a little harsh to call to sack him. Would be very interested to hear his comments though!

Trader888 (U10516491) posted Jan 17, 2009 Just back from the match and am trying to dry out...what a day! Dean Richards really did show the world once and for all that he's all brawn and absolutely NO brain...what a call to make on Evans?? Then the decision to take a scrum with 10 mins to go when a relatively easy penalty would have brought them to within 3 points...incredible. But Ulster were magnificent...back to the Ravenhill fortress of old!

Moneys Too Tight (U10781719) posted Jan 17, 2009 The real test will be how the team responds to Richards having this moment of brain fade! Will they still trust his decision making over the next few weeks? Will they trust his selections? And what about Malone? I think he is going to be toast now for the rest of this season. His confidence will be shot, and he will feel he cost his team a win. Ulster were okay, but they didn't threaten in the second half. Come on Leinster, whip Wasps please to make me feel better!!!!

quinsclubvcountry (U13782550) posted Jan 17, 2009 If you take the time to read the quins website write up you'll realise that aparrently the decision to pull evans off before the kick was made by the 4th official much to the annoyance of Deano....or we could all assume the most successful english club coach in the professional game doesn't know what he's doing and a bunch of non professional players do!

lawther420 (U9796143) posted Jan 17, 2009 Deano has tried to blame it on the 4th official for putting it through before the kick off but from where I was sitting he deserved to have it 'pushed through' as he had been in the ear of the 4th offical for the majority of the time he had been down on the touchline doing what Quins and their team (and their supporters) did best on the day!

DrDavidGreen (U9983989) posted Jan 18, 2009 There was nothing wrong nor illegal with Richards' decision except that Malone missed the kick. I once watched O'Gara come on for Ian's brother David (Humphreys) to win the international match with a similar kick. Quins will still qualify for the next stage and may yet seal a home draw if Ulster or Llanelli beat Stade Francais. Stop the critique and laud the efforts of an Ulster team which came of age last evening. Williams - whom I've criticised in the past - is also getting things together in his selection- and on-field tactics. His decision to bring McCullough on in the second half and Steinmetz later were top-class. He was outwitted by Andy Robinson in the previous week but was definitely in a superior class to Deano last evening. Plaudits also to the French referee who took no nonsense from an importunate Nick Easter. Easter lost Quins the match not Richards but Ulster were determined to win it from the outset. Next season could well be theirs.
