Has Beckham again confounded the critics?

European Football AC Milan
comment on the article

When news of David Beckham's loan move to AC Milan first emerged, many critics again dismissed it as a cynical marketing ploy.

The former England captain was moving to the San Siro to shift shirts, not to play in the first team, the player's detractors said.

Yet Beckham played 88 minutes of Milan's 2-2 draw with Roma at Rome's Olympic Stadium yesterday.

And the club's hierarchy have been so impressed with his attitude and condition that they want to keep him beyond the end of his two-month loan.

The only sticking point will be trying to persuade LA Galaxy to let their superstar miss the start of the MLS season.

This isn't the first time Beckham has confounded his critics of course.

In the middle of the 2006/2007 La Liga season, manager Fabio Capello announced that the midfielder would never play for Real Madrid again.

Instead of complaining, Beckham kept his head down, impressed in training and won Capello over. He went on to play a key role in Madrid winning the league title.

England coach Steve McClaren had similarly dismissed Beckham when he took over from Sven-Goran Eriksson, but was forced to backtrack and recall the midfielder.

What do you think? Has Beckham got a significant role to play for Milan this season? Can he help them climb the table, as Leonardo believes?

Or has his first competitive game for the club been over-hyped?

Yeah, I can just see SkySports, Setanta and BBC all fighting over TV rights for MLS.

Stats can mean whatever you want them to. The fact of the matter is, Beckham (and the equally talentless Mrs) would rather be seen hanging out with 'Brangelina' and the Cruise's than do his job.

Please remind me, how many games did Beckham actually complete for LAG last season?

Forza
Your comments are a bit difficult to follow at times.

''Yeah, I can just see SkySports, Setanta and BBC all fighting over TV rights for MLS.''
Who is that comment for?

Brangelina? I 've no idea what that is!

''People watch(ed) England, Man Utd, Real Madrid and AC Milan games because they are footy fans, not fans of Beckham.'' We all know that 5flop is only watching Milan for one reason.

''The proof that Beckham is no longer the publicity magnet he once was is the fact that he's hardly attracted new audiences to MLS or Serie a''
You are clearly wrong about MLS.
Serie A? he's only been there 5 minutes!

''Stats can mean whatever you want them to.''
They mean that attendances in MLS are at a record high.

Imp

Beckham has 'raised' the profile of MLS because he's a celebrity playing football, when he should actually be a footballer, full stop. It is not for his footballing ability that fans flock to the Home Depot, it's in the hope that they might catch a glimpse of Beckham's new best mate, Tom Cruise.

What I meant by the SkySports comment was that no-one on this side of the pond gives two s***s about how Beckham's getting on. AND the initial fanfare that greeted him has gradually died down as Americans begin to wonder what all the fuss was about.

I am really pleased to hear reports of Beckham doing well at Milan. He never should have gone to America in the first place and I really hope he makes his Milan move a permanent fixture. I can't believe people still doubt Beckham's talents after all that he has done for football, he is probably the best footballing role model around

Funny to read these ridiculously inaccurate predictions. Beckham has once again shown that he is a great player, not that anyone with a brain needed convincing.

well done twinklebathat,in our sport you need to perform and prove yourself for entire seasons and for whole tournaments to be regarded as a "great player".That is not the same as scoring an annual free-kick to absurd over praise by clowns like you wihtout one iota of knowledge on our sport whatsoever then fading into obscurity which is what beckham did at madrid-and is what will happen at milan.Mark the words of someone whos predicted Beckhams story at every turn.

beckham has still got his gift of football, i hope he stays there for years now. the italian game can keep him going till 38+ e.g. maldini, cafu. and he is the only english international since the early 90's to have succeeded in europe.
