LAST LINE OF DEFENCE

Premier League Arsenal

What with all of the talk of Arshavin and potential suitors to fill the "creative midfielder" tag Wenger spoke of there's been (understandably in my opinion) a fair weight of folk questioning the need for Wenger to prioritise a "defensive midfielder" and a "world class" centreback.

I'd like to speak about the Arsenal defence, hopefully without posting a "War & Peace" sized post, musing over the weaknesses, how's where's and why's, as well as the inevitable "who should Wenger sign" question!

First off I need to say, I would be amazed if Wenger signed a defender in the January transfer window! I have a strong feeling that Wenger will wait until the summer before adressing the defensive issue, which obviously is going to be fundamental to Arsenals future.

I just want folks input, thoughts etc regarding the personnel at the clubs disposal and of course what the club needs to do to help remedy what is a big portion of Arsenals "Achillies heel".

I personally feel that come the summer (and this is of course just one mans opinion), Wenger will move Gallas on, for a decent fee for a player over 30, free up some 80/90k a week in wages and purchase a player of some class. The question marks will then be raised over Toure accompanying the said player. Does Toure still have the quaities required to be that world class, all singing-all dancing defender relying on finesse and athletic prowess as opposed to raw power and aerial might. I don't have the answer to that and am sceptical as to his physical state these days.

I know that their is a lot of support for Djourou on this board, I also rate the guy, but in my heart of hearts I would be a liar if I said that I think he's "first class", Song also has come on in leaps and bounds and I actually rate him higher as a defender as opposed to a midfield player. Silvestre is a stop-gap and offers that "experience" at the back that Wenger craved (despite some fans scepticism). Put bluntly I cannot look past (if Arsenal are to remain a force and ultimately push on) that Wenger will need to sign a "class act" of a defender, get the best out of Toure (if that's possible or in effect sign 2 centre-backs and re-shape Arsenals "backline".

it is strange that in these days we no longer talk about coaching the players that you have but to go and buy players. no loyalty well only to the money. arsenal's stlye does so much for the game ( as per DR. Socrates-Brazil) however we do need to take more shots in and around the goal area. not only power shots but curves with the inside and outside of the feet. AW should restore order, a fit Toure should be the capt.

I can't understand why Wenger wants a defensive midfielder.
It seems clear to me, and has done for a while, that the first team is desperately lacking width and believe a new winger should be priority.
In recent weeks I'm aware that Wenger has been playing up to 4 central midfielders in midfield.
So as Wenger isn't going to be using Wilshere consistantly for at bare minimum another year(due to his 'protection laws'), I believe a winger is what they need.

do people on here actually ever watch arsenal live? if so please tell me. for instance did the arsenal fans playing down flamini's contribution on here actually ever watch arsenal live last season?

anyone who went regularly last year will tell you that he was the missing ingredient that brought all the strands of our team together. he hadn't even begun to reach his full potential, but he was our player of the season really (although Ade got the headlines and goals). that guy was awesome, truly awesome and if we had him back with Theo fit we wouldn't be talking about crisis at the club and missing CL. no way. he was more of a psychological leader than anyone i've seen since vieira. i miss him soooooooo much, i wonder if he misses us?!prob not, his dad was from milan i think. sadface

Gunners Love 2007 - You're right, we do play with a high backline and it is part of our game and it makes us the team we are. But that doesn't mean we can't have a player like Terry, Upson etc as suggested by Gunfest. After all we managed to play as we do today with Adams and Keown in our team. Only difference is we won stuff back then. My wish list; Given (Almunia is solid but not great, although we could get away with keeping him), Upson or Hangeland and, I know I'll get slated for this - Joey Barton (cheap, good ball winner and available)

"that the first team is desperately lacking width and believe a new winger should be priority."

But you'd expect us to lack width when 2 out of 3 first choice wingers have long term injuries and won't be back for a bit and the 3rd is new to the English game. Even Chelsea can't afford to buy just to cover a few injuries now so some how I don't think we can afford to either. When Rosicky and Walcott are back we'll have width but we still won't have a combative midfielder, not unless Denilson or Diaby grow some b**ls anyway.

IMO Djourou has the potential to be a solid stopgap/reserve in the future if nothing else, but it is true that we need a true leader who can head the ball - players like Carew rip us apart at corners and free kicks on an alarmingly regular basis.

We do need a defensive mid as we have always done to sit in front of the defence, especially considering toure's tendencies to bomb forward. Diarra i think wold have been perfect if a little small so its a shame he's gone, but definately Veloso would be a good buy; there are enough good DM's out there we just need to spend the money to get one.

Everyone says that AW doesn't want to pay top wages. Maybe someone could then explain to me why our wage bill is over 100 million and just a few million behind Man U.

-------------------------------------------

those wages were mailnly from henry and ljungberg, but they both left now and our wage bill is currently lower than it was before.

you said you would get slated for it and you will. Joey Barton is the biggest idiot i've seen. He may be cheap, but he isn't talented ha plays bad football and gets arrested every 20 mins. He is definitley not who we want at arsenal.

I agree that Flamini was our biggest loss in a while, and we do need a new cdm or cb. I got excited when we started talks about arshavin, but a 27 year old for 20 million is stupid. Arsenal have always been about buying young players for less money and turning them into world class players. We should stay that way!!

bring in Hangeland and yaya toure

blah blah blah...

we need hangeland and miguel veloso. and we also need to keep the arsenal way and buy young players and then transform them into world class players, not 27 yr olds for 20 million
