Bid for O'Neil rejected

Portsmouth
comment on the article

We've had a £4.5m for Gary O'Neil turned down by Middlesbrough - and we won't increase our offer, so it looks certain he won't be returning to Fratton Park.

Also, that's the first time I've ever seen Portsmouth release a statement like that.

"we got £35m from 2 transfers ffs!"

-----

I've a feeling the offer won't be increased because we have no more money.

I suspect we will get monthly payments from Real for Diarra, and I think the overall income from Defoes sale was believed to be about £6m.

u still owed money to spurs for defoe so one would imagine that has just been cancelled.

the monthly payments, or 3 or 4 over a couple will be correct so there is not much money around. added to the fact that you are broke and i can see why they are not willing to offer more.

however, how many times has a chairman/manager/ dir of foot said that then a transfer has then been agreed for a higher price so i would think it may still happen.

I like that.

Both the Boro chairman and manager have repeatedly stated that NO senior players will be sold during the January transfer window...

...but clubs STILL put offers in...

...are they hard of hearing (and visually impaired to boot)? doh

==============================

We owed Spurs about 4m for Defoe as part of the sell-on clause from our purchase last year, but part of the deal to take him back there was for that sell on clause to be dropped.

So we got £15m, minus whatever was outstanding on the Mendes and Kaboul transfers so should be seeing nearer £6m out of the Defoe deal, rather than it just being a case of 'wiping the slate clean'.

How much of that goes back into the transfer kitty, we'll probably never know.

Portsmouth said Defoe wasn't for sale but Spurs still put offers in. It's (unfortunately) just the way the transfer market works.

I admire a manager who does stick to his guns and think Southgate has exactly the right attitude to all this. If we miss out on Gary O'Neil, so be it.

In my opinion, if they've rejected the offer and reiterated that they don't want to sell, we should leave it at that. I'd hate for us to become hypocrites, having moaned about how Spurs came in for Defoe.

i find it rather strange that this issue of still owing money for mendes has cropped up. We bought Davis Pamarot and Mendes all at the same time from spurs for a combined 7.5m. So why are papers saying we still owe for mendes? surely if pamarot and davis are paid for so is pedro?

Also doesnt it seem odd that pedro has moved on but we would still be paying for him? that just wouldnt happen would it? surely the money we recieved from rangers would have paid off anything outstanding on the previous transfer?

what do you pompey guys think of o'neil?

not sure its worked out for him up here, decent player tho.

why do pompey think they can offer 1 mill less than they sold him for, and then say "its a decent offer"
has he depreciated in value? what do they do, check the used midfielders guide?

I'm sorry but you are never going to get him for £4.5 million because we bought him for 5.5 so we would be losing another million, and we really can't afford that at the moment!
