United was a very poor side today

League Cup Manchester United

Today's display by United is one of the worst I have seen in a long time. From kick-off to kick-end, these guys played as if they were sleep walking. It all began with the goal keeper making a mess of the first two or three balls he handled (mishandled). His uncertain handling encouraged Derby to shoot at the goal at every opportunity from any distance and it paid off. Poor goal keeping soon transferred to nervousness in the back four. It wasn't just O'Shea who was awful, Evans was not exactly comfortable on the ball and tackles. Rafael could'nt cross if his life depended on it.

Then how about the Midfield? I thought their inability to hold the ball caused Derby's siege of United's half of the field. What was Scholes doing with those wild shots? After the first one, I thought he would at least hit the target with the next. No, he just kept firing into the stratosphere. Gibson should go back to the reserves; he cannot pass unless it is to the opposition. Why is Nani always looking at his feet? If he looked up occasionally, he may find a free team mate to pass the ball to. And why does he insist on taking free kicks? He does not have the skill for it. He used to take good corners. Not today. All he did was kick the ball as far as the nearest opposition defender.

Given the controversy sorrounding him, I thought Tevez would come out firing on all cylinders. Come to think of it, I did not see him in the first half. Never saw him in the penalty box anytime in the match. Wellbeck was pathetic. I thought he had pace, today he was slower than a snail. His first touch was awful. Rooney did absolutely nothing.

Finally, the measure of United's ineptitude was how well rested Carrol, one of the worst goal keeper's United ever had, was. He could have gone to the pub for a drink and returned to his post and his sheet would still have been unsoiled.

Cant believe the TS and some other utd fans on here. We were awful and got beat fair and square. Players were poor too but the over the top reaction is shocking. Guessing u don't really take football in much. Or you just read the papers and listen to friends thoughts?

Rafael is far from the finished article and yes his crossing isnt up to Nev's standards yet nor is his defending but he's played great for us since Brown got injured.
Evans was fine last night, he just needs to be a bit more physical although that is possibly just the way he plays i.e intercepts and reads rather than bully through the back of someone giving away fould. As for his distribution, it was just an off night.
O'Shea, ur comparing him to Evra and it's unfair. He's steady but he's never gunna be a flying down the wing type is he!

Gibson, in his last 2 outings, has played right side when he is a ball playing C.M. That said I dont think he'll make 1st team.
Anderson has been a disappoinment. Maybe it's the second season thing but i'm sure he'll come gd when he's found his role...not sure I know what it is yet.
Wellbeck, where the hell did u get that he was quick? Do u watch football? The boy is raw..give him time and see how he develops. No rush.
Ronaldo, the amazing thing is that when he came back from injury he was banging in the goals and people werent saying a thing and yet his actual performances are no better than now!

The only real concern I have for utd is the holding role and wide left. Without Evra bombing on in to space we struggle as we dont have any wide left players up to it and as proved last night, the position that Commons picked up for the goal is our achilies heel and has been for sometime even with Carrick there, although he has come on superb at tracking players. Shame that Hargreaves never sorted himself out. Says a lot when we dont have the legs of Fletcher in there.

All in all, bad performance and some question marks on some players. But dont go saying they're great one minute and rubbish the next. Makes you sound like every other idiot expert I hear on the tv and read in the papers!

I do think that next season is a big one for Nani though. Unconvinced.
Rant over.

Why are people suddenly coming out of the woodwork now. Last night was no real surprise, as we have been surviving on late 1-goal winners for a while. Our finishing has not been great, but more fundamentally, how many times recently have you seen a United player skinning defenders and putting a defence testing cross into the area. Successful United teams have always been based on pace and attacking flare. We look decidedly ordinary in that area at the moment, even with Ronaldo. Maybe smashing his latest p***s substitute into a barrier will wake him up. devil

Nani wtf? what the hell was he thinking?

At least scholes had an effort in shooting. Nani was too busy looking at the ball. Gibson i thought he was a central midfielder what was he doing on the right?

Tevez looked awful. if thats the way he's going to win the utd fans or fergie then he might as well leave for madrid now.

Everybody was poor last night, the passing was too stiff and nobody could make the ball stick.

Anderson seems to be coming in for a lot of stick here but he seemed the only player(until carrick came on) that was actually moving the ball forward.

Neither of the forwards were able to keep the ball, Tevez with his strength and experience was especially guilty of this.

I think Evans has improved a lot this year, and I think he could eventually become a United Regular.

Anderson looks like he could become a great player, but he had an off night last night.

I'm not sure about Nani yet as despite getting a lot of the ball, he does lose it often. Although, it took Ronaldo a few years to get settled..

I'm impressed with the youngster Rafael, although will he get as many games when Brown comes back?

I loved Tevez last year. I still he think he is a world class player, but something is missing from his game this year. He doesnt look happy, and I dont think his performances this year is worth the 30 million price tag.

Very poor performance, just glad it has come in the carling cup. SAF needs to wield the hairdryer. I know it wasn't a full team but on paper the team looked to win comfortably. I only hope there is a reaction against chelsea at the weekend...

I do agree that carling cup semis should be one leg, but dont forget that were it that way last night Derby wouldn't have been at home as it would've been a neutral venue.
