BDO throws up another classic!!!!!!

What a match the Adams VS Gurney was. Gurney is another future star in the making. This is the third or fourth lakeside classic and we are still in the second round. The PDC had only one or two in the entire tournament. I thought the Hankey match was going to go to a 5th set but Hankey was just superb. He could win the world championship. I am loving every minute of these championships and the standard is amazing. The atmosphere has been buzzing and electric tonight as well.

Adams and Hankey are two of my darts heroes and idols. They have the game to beat Taylor of the PDC. I think Adams is such a great role model for darts. He is a great ambassador for the sport and the most popular in the sport. Adams and darts go hand in hand with people now. He is a household name and the peoples champion. I really want him to win it. He is a great character as well.

Anyways, we saw Webster get thrashed tonight which just shows the standard in the tournament. He was one of the favourites and it just shows you have to be playing superb darts just to reach the last 8. Whitlock who might I add should have beaten Taylor in the GSOD, is out as well and he was one of the pre turnament favourites. The standard has never been higher in the BDO.

Some of the PDC lovers who have little knowledge about darts, say but the averages are higher in the PDC. Yes that might be right but there are so many factors that contribute to this as I will list below:

1. PDC use the easier dart boards for scoring. Very small thin wires make it easier to hit the 140s and 180s. This increases the amount of 140s and 180s by about a third in the PDC. Taylor had a record average of 110, I have been told by someone who makes these dart boards that it greatly increases your average by about 7 points. Taylor would only be averaging 103 in the BDO which is a fact.

2. PDC players have constant frequent breaks. If the BDO players had these then they would score higher. It is harder to be consistent without constant breaks and rest which the PDC players provide. If the PDC players did not have any then take 3 or 4 points off their average. If the BDO players had them then put 3 or 4 points on their average.

3. PDC players play the big tournaments more regularly. They are use to the limelight. When the BDO expands with Setanta sports and becomes bigger with more money than the fake PDC, then watch the averages rocket.

Anyways, does anyone know who sings the throw those poison arrows song which they have after every match on the BBC interactive programme. Want a great theme which is much better than the sky one. I sing to that tune and would greatly appreciate the artist.

Honest discussion please!!!!!!

Have you noticed though out of those 27, about 20 of them are former BDO boys and the ones with the top end averages apart from Taylor defected quite recently ( within the last 4 yrs )

Mally you are still completely "im alright jack" and fail to see beyond it. IM not surprised because you are the duped subscription paying fool thinking the exclusive, polished show and higher average is value and justified. The Sky world doesnt care about most people as long as they are ok and polished and pleased with themselves. When it is in fact bad for darts AS A SPORT. You have small potato minded selfish thinking that is typical of the Sky world.

""The Premier League brings in a mass audience, I’m going to the echo arena next month and there will be 11000 people there. You see hammer a lot of people have sky, I don't know what down trodden circles you operate in but most of the people I know have sky sports, all my friends have it my parents have and my wife's parents have it.""

Im not that interested in yuo giving examples about yourself! Its not that persuasive.
Wow Mally 11,000 other Mallies. A filled up super arenda full of Bros Mally style plastic beer drinkers is not betwitching the nation in any way. Its 11,000 people. Sky at most gets 1 million viewers. This is not bewitching the nation like the old terrestial and tabloid stars and coverage used to.
Im all for high quality darts and good presentation but not to the point where it is no longer and event that captures the public. Thats what Sky do. They've done the same to other amazing sporting events, take the Ryder Cup. This was a huge national event in the 80s and 90s on the beeb , made huge stars of the European players and also got the nation into golf again. Put it on Sky and it has become a footnote again. Polished presentation sure, footnote now. The Olympics and Wimbledon do count because they remain on terrestial.
Still Im so glad you lovely friends and family are happy with their lot Mally.
As I said I find the 9 quid a barrier to people, you can say well it is only 9 quid, but there it is = it stops national involvement , interest, emotion around the major sporting events, it dilutes them.

""Sky has a far-reaching audience and the events it shows bring in massive and I mean massive live audiences. On the other hand the bdo event that is currently on BBC has not had anywhere near the audiences that the ally pally had over the holiday.""

We are talking 1 million for Sky. I believe despite having less quality players the BBC still gets 4 million. If the BBC got back a single world champs again and the Beeb coverage and BDO a refresh - it could generate additional interest and many many more viewers. If Taylor and co were the figures would rise. Darts would be the everyman participation and viewing sport that makes it great.

""And once again phrases like 'sport of the people' just goes to show what an antiquated old-fashioned socialist view of the world you have.""

And you like to think of sports as your own private community. You can have your festering gated community Mally. I prefer to breath in the clean air of the free environment.

Im not saying there shouldnt be Sky coverage and services. If people are willing to pay to see a Premier League happen during the year and it creates extra interest that might not be there during the year then ok.

BUT there are certain events key to their sport like Wimbledon, Word Darts, Ryder Cup that should remain on terrestial for the reasons given.

You seem to think anyone that disagrees with the Sky world is a dinosaur Mally. Well I dont sunscribe to the view that everything in life that is in place now is all sweetness and light. Sometimes things in life go down the wrong track and are not in fact 'progress' at all. But the greed or bad judgement of people took an area down the wrong line. The gated community Sky viewer will smugly switch on this set, pay his subscriptions and feel pleased with it all because they feel they all right Jack and dont want to see past their lounge window.
Sometimes you have to accept times have changed and cannot be as they were any more, and we have to accept it and make the best of what is possible now, other times no, we can do something positive. As I say I hope they put your fees up.

I used to play county youth darts and the standard there was very good. One of my old team mates went on to do very well at the world championship on the PDC side (though they didn't fare so well this year).

I don't think it can be denied that the standard of darts in the PDC is better. It is. However, it doesn't mean that the BDO championships haven't got their place. They're a pinnacle for county and superleague players across the country (and world) and I always dreamed of playing at Lakeside again as I did in a youth open quite a few years ago.

Just because the scoring isn't as heavy, it doesn't make it any less exciting. In fact, in my view, the PDC final was boring as no-one could touch Taylor. There's something about a player missing three darts at a double that makes it more exciting at times. Snooker has a similar thing - it's better when people miss sometimes. Not all the time, of course, we'd be there all night, but you know what I mean I hope.

Also, you can play in BDO competitions (i.e. superleague, county etc) without having to pay to be there. If I remember, the PDC charged around £500 just to be able to enter 10 or so years ago. This means that, as a player, it's only worth it if you're going to do well in 4 out of 5 competitions.

And yes we know the PDC averages are slightly (apart from Taylor and Barneveld) higher than the BDO but those guy's are pro's training 8-10 hrs a day whilst the BDO guys fit their darts around their day jobs.

"Just because the scoring isn't as heavy, it doesn't make it any less exciting."

exactly as I have said before great averages doesnt always make great viewing.

I thought the Anderson Oshea game last night great viewing, especially the way despite the worst average OShea time and time again stole the legs with great finishing and his best darts at the right time.

Also, Sky put way too much weight on averages. they go on about them after 1 leg for god's sake. The only numbers that matter are the sets won, legs won and points remaining.
