PGA Tour: Kapalua, and Crystal Balls

PGA Tour

Shortly after sunset GMT on Thursday, Marc Turnesa launches the first drive of the 2009 PGA Tour season and seldom can the outlook be so full of uncertainty.

The economy, Tiger's return, the economy, the Race To Dubai, and, oh yes, the economy all conspire to cloud the future in an unprecedented way.

In clear response to Commissioner Finchem's plea to Tour players to enter more tournaments in goodwill towards sponsors and advertisers, the World's 2,3,4 players join wounded Tiger in avoiding glorious Kapalua, Phil, Sergio and Padraig with other things on their minds. But we still have an elite field of 33 tournament winners and the Tour's appetising 1.10 P.M. tee-time pairing of Anthony Kim and Camilo Villegas will ensure plenty of attention to Maui's "Mercedes-Benz Championship".

The "Mercedes" hasn't been won by an American since Furyk beat Sabbatini in a play-off back in 2001 and I can't see Vijay, Ernie and the rest of 'em allowing that trend to change.

That's this week sussed out then, but what about the rest of the year? Glad you asked. Last year my "Eight for '08" was modestly successful in predicting who might do well so pay attention to the "Seven for '09": (Number of awards reduced due to the economy).

*Player of the Year: (Last year's pick: Tiger.)

2009: Tiger again.

*Comeback Player of the Year: (Last year's pick: Canada - Weir and Ames both did well but not well enough.)

2009: Arron Oberholser: Away from us for the better part of two years Oberholser, is allegedly fit and signed off last autumn with a 4th place at the Fry's Open. Start your betting year with an each-way punt on Arron at Pebble Beach: 4th, 6th, 1st in his last three trips to the "AT&T".

*Rookie of the Year: (Last year's pick: Day, from Flanagan. Jason Day was one good final round away from comfortably retaining his card, but allowed the Turning Stone Championship to get away, and he's presumably back to the Nationwide. Jason: Please get fit first.)

2009: Webb Simpson: Walker Cupper had modest success in a handful of Tour events, and two seconds during a short Nationwide shift. Played well in Q-School and could be one to watch.

And some awards of my own:

*First first-time winner: (2008 pick Tim Clark from Poulter - both had second places).

2009: Graeme McDowell from Paul Casey.

*Breakthrough Player: (2008 pick: Baddeley - who disappointed following Pete Bender's illness.)

2009: Hunter Mahan: Got a taste of how rich the rewards can be at the Ryder Cup; he'll focus on his short game and grab two wins in '09.

*Good Ole Boy: Award cancelled after 2008 pick Bubba Watson faded in the wake of Elkington winding him up in New Orleans. I don't fancy Tommy Gainey so this award is to be withdrawn.

*Best new player never covered by the British Press: (2008 pick Nicholas Thompson finished 41st on the money list.)

2009: Not so bold as last year but under-the-radar '08 winners Dustin Johnson, Turnesa and Parker McLachlan are all expected to shine in 2009.

Finally to the Majors:
Masters: Geoff Ogilvy (from Weir and Harrington): Same pick as '08, but Ogilvy peaked at Doral - he won't make the same mistake this year.

US Open: Woods (If absent Garcia)

Open Championship: Graeme McDowell (from Harrington)

PGA Championship: Woods (2nd at Hazeltine in 2002, one better this time.) Long shot: Oberholser

('08 picks were Ogilvy, Woods, Westwood, Love, all of whom had fine years but only Tiger peaked at the right time - for me.)

So, now you know what's going to happen; you just have to follow the next ten months to discover exactly how.

Meanwhile, Kapalua is on many lists of courses to "Play before you die". I've played there so I guess I'm on schedule. But those lists are correct; tune in this week to discover why.

Happy New Year

Kwini,

I wouldn't read anything into Els putting display over this week. Last night on Sultana they gave the course ranking for the US Tourfrom 2008 and Kapalua was the easiest course on the Tour for fairways hit and GIR but was the toughest course on the Tour for putting. The average putts per round was around about 31.8 compared to a Tour average of around 28 or 29 and the percentage of putts outside 25 feet holed was miniscule at about 3 or 5%. It seems that everyone struggles on the greens at this place. Be it the exposed greens in the wind, the undulations or the grain it just seems to have the number of the guys playing.

On a related subject, Boo Weekley had a 3 putt from about 2.5 feet so he can be added to the likes of Els, Villegas and Scott who have had a tough time on the dancefloor so far.

Agreed chilli, Boo was four putts within about 8ft, but he handled it almost too well!
Huge greens there, it will be interesting to see how today goes.
Ernie one of the best in bad weather.

No need to have set an alarm for this morning. The thunder, lightning, and torrential rain on my rooftop were sufficient to bring me astir.
Last night, the trailing edge of this system that, unfortunately, extends all the way up to the quagmired states of Oregon and Washington, moved through the northern part of this state faster than a Ferrari around Manchester airport.
It seems to have slowed down a little now, and I sincerely hope that this does not signal a stalling, as Maui is currently slap bang in the middle of the heaviest precipitation.
Should it continue to move along at a steady pace, there’s plenty of wind pushing it along, which will be the next feature to be seen. Question is, what direction will it take, and what time will be strongest?
If it’s a Northwesterly, most of the players will be able to use their own personal aiming points, to compensate for it.Should it be a Westerly direction, then look out below!. Very rarely do such winds occur on that course, and it’s something that very few of the players would have been able to practice for. If it pushes above 25mph from the west, the sponsors may want to issue pith helmets to the gallery, to avoid costly law suits.
Sure the greens are almost as big as a small common in England, but it’ll be a crapshoot while the ball is in the air. Particularly if some of the gusts are constant, and others start swirling.
Tee off time is scheduled for just after closing time on 606, so I’ll stop by just before last orders, with an update.
With the likely conditions, I wouldn’t mind wagering a few bob on Justin L, but gambling is illegal in the 50th state…
so I’ll save my money.winkeye

Looks like it may have just been a storm in a tea cup. Plenty of blue on the horizon, and the winds are very moderate,
.........so far.
I'm off up the road to watch me some golf.smiley

Hey Kwini

I assume you watched the final round last night, I couldn't stay up that late on a work night.

Just wondering what you thought or any interesting observations. Didn't sound like much drama after the end of the first nine.

Hello mclaren,
Yeah, watched the lot.

Was kinda afraid that Ogilvy would implode after missing short par putts on 7 and 8, but he bounced back with an eagle on 9 and then birdied five of the next six, and that was it.

Highlight of the rest of the evening was Anthony Kim's tap-in eagle on 18, second shot from 274 yards according to shotlink. Almost better than Tiger-esque in that he lasered it straight at the flag. Brilliant shot. Almost matched the Goose's albatross!

Then DLIII holed ten footers for four on 17 & 18 to match him for 2nd which should get him in to the top 64 for the WGC Match Play. Next stop, the top 50 for the Masters.

And Ernie held it together for a nice bounce-back after his putting fiascos of Friday and Saturday.

SONY next week and a good field there also.

Seems that the kinda wind conditions that I wrongly predicted for Kapalua, may be an issue at the Sony. (Civil defense quote)

"Damaging southwest winds possible Thursday and Friday. A strong low pressure system northwest of Kauai, along with a cold front moving through the Islands, are expected to bring strong southwest and west winds across the State Thursday and Friday.

Rains will also accompany the front but winds are the main concern with this storm system. Strongest gusts will occur on the windward sides of the smaller islands and over higher terrain, where damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible. Wind advisories will likely be issued for many areas, and a High Wind Warning is possible for the summit of Haleakala." yikes
