Wales' wing options

Welsh Wales
comment on the article
Mark Jones

Shane Williams should be over his shoulder problem, but with Mark Jones' appendix operation worrying Wales ahead of the Six Nations, what are the other wide options open to coach Warren Gatland?

Take a look, let me know if there's anyone you think I've overlooked and tell me who you'd go for. Remember you can always have a try at our squad selector.

Leigh Halfpenny

The fresh-faced youngster was the revelation of the autumn series after his step up from the Wales Under-20 side, taking to the Test arena like a duck to water. The Blues man was completely unfazed by winning his first cap against world champions South Africa, and - after his two tries against Canada - Gatland even suggested that he had risen above Williams in the pecking order. Goal-kicking and experience at full-back add versatility to the squad.

Tom James

James' rapid ride into regional and international rugby was set back by some unfortunately indiscrete comments on Wales team-mate Mark Jones. But Gatland and James have put that behind them, and injuries at the Blues have given the 21-year-old the chance to re-stake his international-class credentials. Dynamic and powerful running make him a threat to any defence, but still needs work on his game awareness.

Jamie Roberts

Roberts started his Wales career on the wing, and has since played at full-back and centre. Looked to be making the inside-centre jersey his own before fracturing his skull against Australia - he hopes to be back in January. In his absence, though, Gavin Henson has returned, and the arguments for restoring his Grand Slam centre partnership with Tom Shanklin are formidable. Finding a place for Roberts on the wing could give Wales a tremendously physically imposing three-quarter line.

Richard Fussell

There may still be a lot of people asking 'Richard who?', but not if they've analysed the Dragons youngster who is having something of a breakthrough season. The 24-year-old from Bedlinog has represented Wales at junior levels and looks to have Halfpenny's knack of always making the right decision. This Six Nations has probably come too soon for Fussell, but if he keeps up his try-scoring at the Dragons then Wales' summer tour beckons.

Morgan Stoddart

Stoddart has been an outstanding attacking force from full-back for the Scarlets this season, but he remains far behind Lee Byrne in the battle for the Wales 15 jersey. While his attacking skills have never been in doubt, there have been more concerns over his defence and a move to the wing could be an attractive option. His selection would be a major surprise, though, with other candidates offering stronger tackling options.

There are the choices as I see them, and I've put them in the order that I'd go with should either Williams or Jones be unavailable. Thoughts?

How does Leigh Halfpenny's goal kicking ability matter? They will definitely have both Stephen Jones and James Hook in the squad so Halfpenny's kicking won't exactly be needed. Unless both are completely failing with the boot, which really isn't likely. (Even then Gavin Henson would take them)

He has only been playing at the regional level for a couple of seasons which includes a lengthy injury lay-off. If you honestly think he hasn't improved then there is little point arguing with you as you have obviously made your mind up about him as your "blah blah blah" comment shows.
Against Leinster on Saturday he showed strong running, good in contact and awareness to set the ball up when he was tackled. He often broke the first tackle and made good yards.
You have a problem with him as a person and it seems that affects your judgement of him as a player.

As an international winger Mark Jones is a fine straight-line runner, yes, he may be able to tackle but I would have thought that was a prerequisite for any rugby player international or grass roots local council pitch on a Saturday afternoon weather permitting.ok
Nevertheless, to say he is the hardest tackler in the side is stretching even the oned-ness a little too far.biggrin
He may have tackled well but then that is his task in the defensive mode for the national side. Perhaps he should look at his other task like say scoring some tries.biggrin
I know what you are going to say the GS was based on solid defence and I would pick anyone apart from Jones on the wing at present even Fussell. He is a professional rugby player and should take developmental issues to heart and try and improve his game , as for Popham IMHO he was not that good at Leeds and he is one of the only 8’s who again IMHO did not carry well for the national side or the Turks.biggrin

Sorry a two eyed Turk now that is not something you see every day!!!!

Anyway, I saw this link and thought you could pass it on to Mr Jones when you see him tackling so hard.

Got stick with Shane, Lee and Mark if they're fit. Leigh is playing with incredible authority and confidence and add the boot. I like Tom James and wonder if he'd play well at outside center with a bit of time. We are spoilt for choice in the backs barring more injuries. The lineout is the main concern.

I'd like to see Dwayne Peel back at his best. Maybe he was neglected in the autumns, but still one of the best go forward scrum halves in the world

Have to pretty much agree with Sean D. At the moment Fussell and Tom James is a close call. FusseLL is very under-rated, probably because he's at the dragons. Would not include Stoddart as he hasn't a clue how to tackle, would prefer Shanklin there over Stoddart if Roberts is paired with Henson in the centre.

capitalrugby for your info Ian Evans is out inured and has been for weeks.
