What will happen in Sydney?

South Africa reached 62-1 at stumps on day four in Sydney - and thus need 314 on the final day to complete a clean sweep of the series.

But can they do it?

Well, for starters it looks as though they will have to do without skipper and opener Graeme Smith, who retired hurt after breaking his hand in the first innings.

History is hardly on their side either.

The highest fourth-innings total to win a Test at Sydney is the 288-2 the Australians scored against South Africa during the 2005-06 season.

And then there are the cracks running down the pitch.

You can ask Hashim Amla about them, as a routine length delivery from medium pacer Andrew McDonald reared at him alarmingly towards the end of play.

Having said that, the Proteas have had a brilliant summer and are playing with a great deal of confidence.

They chased down 414 to win the first Test in Perth (admittedly on a much better track) and have already said they are determined to give the Aussies nothing.

The best chance they might have of doing this is by drawing the Test - is that the most likely result?

Oz will win the 3rd test. Even if SA bat well it will be 2-0 win. 3-0 win is a daydream for SA.

Test cricket is the code we're talking about here - as that is what they are playing now in Sydney. I dont think , as a neutral, there is anyway that India could be regarded as the top side - just because they beat a 3rd rate Oz side at home ? No way, SA are the team now for the next decade, their top batsmen aside from Kallis are all in the 20's - Temdulkar,Laxman,Dravid will all be retiring in the next couple of years

Addick_Stu we are not talking about the next 1 to 2 years from now. Fairandbalanced said India are the best team 'now'. I think so are SA. Tendulkar, Laxkman might go in a year or 2, but India got the bench strength. You haven't seen Rohit Sharma, Pujara, ,Manoj Tiwari etc.. India can only get better.

One more thing. If you think India beat a 3rd grade OZ, then SA beat a 4th grade! Why? because there was no fit Lee and Symmonds. Now they are not even there. Makes sense?

Addick_stu, precisely! That is why I rate SA and India as joint #1 teams. India beat Oz in India, but with Lee in full flow. SA is beating OZ in Oz, without(or injured) Lee, and Symmonds. May be I can refresh your memory. India beat OZ in Perth, would have won the series but for that Sydney dingdong. That, and the series loss to India in India have really demaralized the Ozs. And that is the team SA is whacking! Can't wait for a India/ SA series.

i think the Aussies did really well through out those 4 days but remember the first test which SA won in the last day. but i think OZ got it in their hands. those first two mathces smith gave a good start to the SA innings as they don't have that luxuary now i don't think they will be able to win this match. OZ bowling look very strong in this match so i think they are more likely to win this. still you know for a fact if smith was there, the match is in a different situation. anyways good match as all 3 results are possible.

bsurat, so the SA team is whacking, are they? I don't know what sites you frequent, but I really don't want any more details if you please.

As a now over pessimistic Oz fan, I expect us to lose, but applaud Punter for making the declaration and going for the win.
