Meyer could leave Leicester.

English Leicester

The BBC is reporting that Heyneke Meyer - the South African coach who joined Leicester Tigers this season - could be leaving due to family concerns at home.
How big a blow is this, and who would replace him for the key second half of the season?
Richard Cockrill had a good spell last season before Loffreda arrived. Perhaps he is now matured enough to be the long term solution?
And there are parallels elsewhere in Europe, most notably at the Ospreys and London Irish where key coaches have left and those appointed from within have taken the club forward.

My first comment - He should sort out the family issues first, rugby, indeed any sport as important as it is does not come above life.

Second - Don't replace him ( or anyone ) before they have gone ! leave Cockers in temp charge for as long as it takes to know the full situation.

We are full of Rugby tradition ,which as everyone knows, means we are a FAMILY CLUB ,let us not forget it.

Good luck and best wishes Mr Meyer.

Good luck Mr Cockers..... may Bath be the start

Tigers have always done best since i started watching as a neatral 7 years ago when they have had strong leadership from the back division.

This is someone who can give the whole team direction and a game plan, harnessing the forwards power with some productive back play.

cockerill cannot therefore be the man for the job beacuse there si no strong backs coach around.leadership in the club has been slely forwrad based for over 2 years and this is evident on the pitch

Bit surprised no one has been calling for the return of Dean Richards, John Wells, or even Martin Johnson!

If Meyer does not return, Leicester WILL apoint Cockerill for the remainder of the season and then search for a new coach, may it be from within or a foreigner. It will not be Cockerill as a permanent coach. He is inexperienced and has no real vision. He is an ideal forwards coach. The only way to make it work would to have a shared role of head coach between the forwards and backs coach.

Meyer returned to South Africa on Tuesday due to severe illness in his wife's immediate family. As it stands, it is highly unlikely that he will be returning to leicester due to the sort of illness. It is thought that Leicester will offer Meyer the chance of having the rest of the season off for compassionate leave while Cockerill takes over for the remainder of the season. It is this sort of thing that makes you realise that at the end of the day rugby is only a game, good health and family are what really matter and i send my best wishes to Meyer and all his family.

Regarding Loffreda he was sacked because the players disliked him and did not connect with his style of coaching. He was a poor communicator and did very little for the team. It was Cockerill who took tigers to where they got to last season and certainly not Loffreda...are they not good enough grounds to sack someone? Yes it could have been dealt with better but i agree with the decision made and believe that Meyer was so right for the job which is why this news is so sad. I really hope that him and his family get through this and that one day he may return to Leicester. But as i have said above, in the meanwhile he has the support of the club and the fans and we all wish him the best.

MCSPUDS4824 "Until loffreda tigers have always appointed coaches from within."
Bob Dwyer was from outside the club.

If we want to be one of the best sides in Europe, we have to find the best coach/players from a large a pool as possible, i.e. worldwide. We cannot always rely on local talent.

And before Mr Dwyer, Tony Russ was an outsider. You might well argue that Tigers have had as many outsiders as coach as Leicester boys.

You might also argue that Russ and Dwyer were the guys who put together the team that Deano took to glory.

Outside blood is good - especially for an inward looking club like Tigers - any prospect of Mr Meyer going at this stage is awful from the club's perspective. We need a settled period for some of his ideas to take

However - more important - much more important - is that he takes care of his family. I wish him and his well.
