Forest Green Rovers 3 - 4 Derby County

Date:
3 January 2009
Competition:
FA Cup

Classic, classsic FA Cup stuff. The non league dreamers Forest Green might have been 76 places below Derby in the league pyramid, but they pushed them all the way. The game had it all - a bone hard pitch, a sold out stadium in leafy surrounds and a two goal deficit for the Rams to chase early on. The back four were pretty awful in the first half, although Martin Albrechtsen levelled with a header for 2-2 after Rob Hulse had got one back. Derby dominated in the second half as they started to play some football in the tricky conditions, but they had to come from behind when Paul Stonehouse drilled in a low shot beyond Carroll. Paul Green equalised for Derby again, and the game was finally put to bed when Steve Davies bashed in a penalty after Kris Commons was brought down - the defender Jones was sent off. Can you remember a match to rival this one in terms of incident? It was a terrific cup tie. Do you think it enhances Chris Hutchings credentials for the manager's job? Or will the Manchester United match put paid to that? Let me know what you reckon and I'll try and include your comments on Monday night's Sportscene Talk-In on BBC Radio Derby.

What a strike by Preston lad Jon Smith!

Shame you couldn't finish the job off Smudger!

I notice many of the Derby fans from the vitriole you spat at PNE a couple of years ago - we warned you about wee Billy the Poison Dwarf, but you can smile now - look where he's ended up!!!

That's where your decline started - poaching him from us!

Well i didn't see the game but it sounds exciting. to be honest i wasn't expecting a win and i'm a derby fan! thing is we can sit here and moan but do you seriously think anything is going to change with hutchings? he is the assistant of jewell's the stle isa going to be the same so lord knows why people were expecting an onslaught.

I'm extremely happy with the win, when things aren't going well for the "bigger" club they usually mess up against the "smaller" teams. look at man city, on awful form lost to forest, its all handbags and gladrags at stoke and they lose to hartlepool, chelseas home record aint the best this season scolari moaning about lack of transfer funds and they draw to southend at home! we did well to go away and play in conditions the players aren't used to and get the win!

Hutchings isn't the man for the job we need a new face in charge, wouldn't mind him staying but not as manager thanks!

I thought Forest Green looked a pretty fair side, and notice that your results have been good recently, so I'm sure especially as you have a good manager coveted by bigger clubs, that you will climb out of the relegation zone. Nice ground, good friendly clubhouse, reading the programme, a well run community focussed club, and 2 great pubs in Nailsworth, the George & the Village & the Ram Inn on the way. Some of the greedy prima donnas can learn a lot from clubs like Forest Green, at a level where football can be fun, and not just about money, debt and staff turnaround.

Ross - very, very happy with Cloughs appointment first of all, but in comment to you saying Billy Davies will get a good reception. .....think you've had a few too many shandys mate! After what he said about it should have been preston at wembley etc, and the way he engineered his own exit, I think he'll get the reception he deserves!
