Rafael Nadal Vs Andy Murray - Round One

comment on the article

Andy Murray, after defeating Roger Federer in a very close match faces Rafa Nadal who defeated Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-2 6-3.

It might only be an exhibition, but i think that for either player, beating the other would be just as sweet as the 250,000.

Okay, maybe not but Nadal will defintaly be looking for revenge after Murray superbly ended his Us Open. As for Andy, a chance to get a victory over Nadal before the Tour season has properly begun would be brilliant, and a sign that again he has what it takes to beat Rafa.

I didn't really see Nadal's macth with Davydenko but from what i've heard he played very well for the most part and served very well. Murray also played some great tennis against World Number 2 Roger Federer although for sometime towards the end of the 4rd set it looked like Federer would go on and clinch the match.

Either way, whoever wins or loses, tomorow's final should be a very intense match which will produce high quality tennis and hopefully can prive some insight into just what we're gonna get throughout 2009.

On a sidenote, is it just me, or does Rafa look slightly worse for wear. It might just be me but when i seen him in the crowd watching the end of Murray Vs Federer he didn't look too well, any else notice that?

It's hilarious to see "Murray will never win a Grand Slam" has now subtley morphed into "Murray will never win more than one Grand Slam". When he eventually wins a Grand Slam, then two, the bar will be raised yet again. Whatever Murray does will never be good enough for these chip-on-the-shoulder English bigots. I am enjoying seeing them getting enraged every time Murray proves them wrong. Keep spouting off, losers. It's very satisfying to see you make fools of yourselves.

Since Totonto he has been very consistant. And even a 5week break hasnt dampened that. One slam final, two masters semis and two master win and 1 atp tour win is very consistant.

I dont agree with some who think you have to win a slam to be incontention for winning another. Those are just safe predictions. Murrays form on the hardcourts are proof alone.
I also feel his grass play is a lot better then others will admit. There is only 2 events realisticly he will ever play on grass every year and in 08 he posted 2 QFs.

He volleys tremendously better then djoko and can easily match fed

This is typical of the English media to try claim Andy Murray as
one of their own.
Any sign of a success story and they want to be associated. He's Scottish and will always be that and not English. Same with Chris Hoy who
is also Scottish but you want to claim him too. Get over it and find your own success stories!!

PS. Well done to Andy a true Scots man.

The Scottish and English are both British - arguments of this ilk are similar to people arguing that visiting Newcastle from Edinburgh is 'a trip abroad'.

Andy Murray represents Britain, which contains England.
Only if this wasn't the case could Scots 'deny' the English of their credit.

And I'm Scottish, by the way.

Can i just say to the british tennis fans out there who are still doubting Murray, 1.maybe if you gave more support to him then he might do better.
2. You wait over 70 years for a Brit to win a Grand Slam and now, we have a better chance of winning one since Tim Henman and you still dont give support! What is wrong with you people, this is precisely the reason why British sport generally is never very good, because nothing is ever good enough for some people. So yeah, ive finished my little essay, Well Played Murray!!!!

So how do I fit into all this ... I'm half Scot/half English ... best of both worlds I suppose.

I don't know what's wrong with some Brit fans either bestatfifa09. I can't say that I find Murray's style particularly easy on the eye, but at last we have a player who has the real killer instinct + unafraid of any opponent. My fav player said he was the best of the youngsters and that was before Murray became the player he is now, so that's good enough for me.

He has now beaten Nadal 3 times on the trot and Federer twice - and even if exhos don't count in the rankings, today's victory must give him a tremendous boost mentally at the very beginning of the year.

Of course they could both feel the effects of their tough match next week .. but hey, these are youngsters ... 21 + 22 ... not 27 or 28.

I thought it was a fantastic exho match today - the crowd really got their money's worth. Great play from both of them.

GrumpyJoeWalsh - clearly the tongue in cheek remark was lost on you. I for one am a big supporter of Andy Murray and am extremely pleased for him and all he has achieved in the last couple of seasons in particular. If he does not go on to be the best British tennis player since Fred Perry I will be disappointed.

Any player that beats Federer and Nadal in the same tournament deserves all the plaudits they get and what I was actually doing was making a mockery of the honours system, not Murray's tennis achievements.

It was not only great match to watch as a Murray fan it was also great for tennis. Theses sorts of matches against each other will be going on 5 years down the line. They are as even as ever and I believe despite lossing so badly at SW19 he will have much closser matches on grass now. I still think it will be a year or 2 before he is as good on grass but the king of clay will prob stay that if they ever meet on clay I think he will loss badly. But Murray you are great keep playing like that and by the end of the year you will be in the worlds best 3 and challenging the worlds best 2 the year after thats what I think where he will be as closs to the complete package as will ever be. Go Murray and I believe he has a really chance in the first GS down under. I think at least semi but I really do think he can win this trophy. Lets all hope and give him the best thoughts as he goes to Dubai and try to win that trophy. Go Murray.
