McCarthy ready to unshackle Shackell

Championship Wolverhampton Wanderers

Jason Shackell

When the transfer window slammed shut at the end of August, million pound signing Jason Shackell would hardly have expected to wait until it next opened for a chance to properly launch his Wolves career.

Injury in the home win against Swansea, and then the stunning performances of on-loan Michael Mancienne, left Shackell not even able to land a place on the bench.

With Neill Collins earning the right to be "first reserve" behind Mancienne and Richard Stearman, Shackell has a Molineux career record of two starts and eight substitute appearances - including that cameo between the sticks at Preston.

But with Mancienne recalled to west London, and Mick McCarthy expected to shuffle his pack at Blues in the FA Cup, this could be an excellent chance for Shackell to muscle his way into the promotion push.

Stearman is obviously and deservedly McCarthy's first choice, so the battle is on for Collins and Shackell, with Jody Craddock also nearing fitness. And Shackell has the added benefit of being a left footed central defender.

I'm a massive fan of Collins' wholehearted approach to life in the Wolves team, but there is the occasional slip - like the bemusing way he booted the ball behind for a corner at Blackpool on Monday night when he wasn't under any obvious pressure.

So Shackell needs to step up to the plate, and show us why he was so well thought of at Carrow Road, and why he was worth £1m.

McCarthy won't reveal his team plans for tomorrow, but I expect Shackell, Sam Vokes and maybe Carl Ikeme to feature.

Super Mick, who's closing in on Rangers striker Alan Gow, could potentially even rest the outstanding Kevin Foley and goal king Sylvan, leaving Shackell alongside Collins with Stearman once again at right back.

If Wolves were languishing in mid table, tomorrow would be a massive game for me. But I have to admit, and I'm almost ashamed to say it, the FA Cup means little or nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Only one thing matters between now and May. It's a nine letter word that begins with P and ends in romotion.

But tomorrow could be a really big game for Shackell.

If you look at the goals against column in the matches Mancienne has played in compared to those he hasn't there is quite a difference. If we are not going to get him back or sign a replacement then our guys need to improve a bit.

i think shackell has something to prove to us, super mick, and himself. I think he could be an important part of our promotion push

mick has quoted saying the whole squad tommorow will be of his first team so were looking at our usual starting 11 and subs together but IMO vokes will definitley start with iwelumo

John,

I think we will see a full strength side for Birmingham tomorrow. I can see Stephen Ward, Matt Jarvis and Michael Kightly featuring for sure. Not so sure about Shackell, Ikeme or Vokes though.

I think you are being unnecessarily harsh on Collins, he may be good but he doesn't have eyes in the back of his head! All he needed was any one of his team mates to shout "TIME!" and he would have known he was in the clear.

For all he knew he could have turned on the ball right into someone like Liam Dickinson, Gow or Reid who would have robbed him and buried the ball past Hennessey.

From these sunny climes of Cape Town, what I witnessed during the game against Blackpool - Hill is at best average & certainly not pedigree. Until he was replaced (finally) how many Pool attack moves targeted his position?
Most....

Hi John
I think that victory in todays cup tie at st andrews will also prove to be a massive psycological boost to our position at the top of the league
we find ourselves in the best position possible at this stage of the season and still players, fans, every man and their dog of every other team in the championship wont accept we ARE there on merit .....
these are good times for us WOLVES fans and good times dont come along that often as weve seen in seasons gone by ......
and i think our squad is the strongest its been for many a year so whoever Mick chooses to play today should take the oppertunity with both hands
you are right though shackell hasnt had the greatest of starts to his molineux career and theres no bigger stage for him to shine than in birmingham citys backyard
I also would like to see sam vokes get a good run out as i feel through no fault of his own that big chris is being unfairly judged by every referee home and away since his sending off after a superb performance away at preston hes the only player in the championship that could be no where near the ball or any other player and give away a free kick im sure im not the only one to have noticed this
I normally wouldnt be too bothered win or lose in any of the cups as you've said promotion comes first but i believe win today and every WOLVES critic will have to stand and take note
THE LEAGUE TABLE DOES NOT LIE

Hello John and thanks for your insight. The only display today at St Andrews will be figure skating. I think you will also share the disappointment of the many fans. But a Club that purports to EPL status that cannot hold an FA Cup tie due to weather whilst games go on around them has some serious self examination due.

Well said John,

Shackell does indeed need to step up to the plate and I hope he does. It will be like a new signing if he does.

On a side issue, I am surprised that we are in the slightest bit interested in the FA cup!
It has been devalued in recent years and it indeed means FA. The fact that Portmouth were handed it last year because no one else was interested is a case in point IMO. To think that they really are a wannabee Wolves team playing in Blue and in a stadium that should be condemned like our old one all those years ago.
(probably the only reason why they have been able to build a team is the fact that they have no stadium to maintain)

Also the fact that the Blouses will get away with
"postponing" todays game because of frost is a joke! EPL team and ground, you're having a laugh!

Premier League Stoke surprisingly going out(whoopee, so what) and a whole host of other EPL clubs playing B teams in this comp again devalues this once great competition. Lets see how many EPL teams make the semi's again this year. Amazing considering the "GULF" between EPL and the rest of the leagues!

Can you remember when it was interesting and truely great when the underdog won causing a genuine upset. In recent times when a "shock" result comes in, the first thing I think is that I can understand that and its not a "shock" at all.

Apathy rules when it comes to the FA cup thesedays. The greedy EPL and the "Champions League" have made sure of that! How many of us can remember being proud of winning the "League Cup"? How bad does that sound now??

Where has all the romance gone?$$$$$$

What was the biggest genuine FA CUP shock that you remember? Please dont say Portsmouth winning last year or Chorley!!!!!

UP THE WOLVES
WHA(FACT)
SWHA.....(FACT)

Smethwick and Proud...to be Wolves on Tour 09.

Bujok, Hi and there are wolves everywhere around the globe, and we all share one common trait - passion for the Old Gold. Do not know mark on GC. I am just sitting up cruising the boards in frustration as I had hoped to be following the derby today but BCFC stuffed that up good and proper. Catch up shortly as the CCC filters out in WW favour.
