2009 predictions

Right then folks these boards have died a bit over the last few days and before that they seemed to have been dominated by discussions of the politics of the sport, so lets try and bring some fun back in time for the New Year!

How many world records do you think that there will be in 2009, and who do you think will run them?

Perhaps a little optimistic, but I reckon we could see records in 4 of the following:

Men
100m (Powell or Bolt)
800m (Kaki)- longer shot but definately with a chance
110H (Robles)

Women
800m (Jelimo)
Jav (Spotakova)
Pole Vault (Isinbayeva - yawn!)

Also wouldn't bet against records in the womens' 5000m (Dibaba) and mens' marathon (Geb).

Any views people?

I'd love to see him do it as I've been a fan for a while - he doesn't seem to have been his old self since he left Clyde Hart, but maybe last year was just transitional - we'll have to wait and see.

I think it's a real shame there isn't another powerhouse nation in the 400s as I reckon the current US crop would stand a decent shot at the 4x4WR if they were pushed. Really can't see them averaging 43.5 as a time trial though.

yeah i think since he changed coach but stayed at baylor it was a little pointless lol hoping the olympics has shoved a rocket up him to sort it our as he clearly has the potential

I would think the 100m and 200m are definate possibiity with bolt so long as stays fit and focussed.

The 110 hurdles also looks like might go as i reckon if Robles had gone full tilt all way to the line at the olympics he would have broken that record. Also watch out for him taking the indoor record for that as well this year.

On the womens side we all know Isinbayeva will be breaking her record yet again but i think Jelimo might very well get close to the 800m Whether she is ready to break it we will have to see but in all should be great to see.

On Wariner he just hasn't been the power house in the 400m that everyone thought he would be when broke on the scene. Thought he would dominate for years to come and the record was only a matter of time. But maybe this is the year he finally proves the point and shows us what he truly made of. Roll on the world championships!!!

And what are the odds of the 4x100m mens record going again? If Americans don't drop the baton and Jamaicans are at full flow how low do you reckon it could go??

in terms of WR's, its about time vlasic breaks past 2.09,

also i wouldnt be suprised if silnov has a few cracks at the indoors one of 2.43 if he stays healthy

in terms of brits i can see
williamson, chambers, edgar and MLF all goin under 10s with pickerin n harry AA coming very close

I'd love to see Dibaba have a crack at Wang Junxia's infamous 10000 record.

However, it would require her to put a lot of her eggs in one basket and a meet director willing to pay for 2 world-class pacemakers.

think the current crop are someway off the world record for the M800m - but it would be good to see someone breaking 1.42. there are a few who came close last year.

would also be good to see a decent 1500m which has been a bit dead the last few years.

2005 1:48.43
2006 1.45.43
2007 1.43.90
2008 1.42.69

That's a pretty impressive progression - and he's still only 19. Kaki must be eyeing up that WR. I still think it's a long shot, but we've seen bigger surprises - who 12 months ago would have thought that Lisa D would be knocking on the door of 4 minutes?!
