Ronaldo - The Ultimate Professional

Premier League Manchester United

The way he gracefully accepted all challenges on him today with a manly handshake was exceptional. He did'nt complain, whinge or lash out once. He was involved in everything United did and is clearly Earth's best player. He should be awarded a fair play award. He was not petulant and when any pass went astray did he complain? Of course not.

..........Hang on, ive been drinking and did anyone else see the game this way?

People always seem very quick to criticise the likes of Ronaldo while glossing over where the real problem lies. We shouldn’t be looking at treating the symptoms but at eliminating the cause. Many players are consistently getting away with hacking at the knees and ankles of opponents time and again within the same match without even so much as a censure from the ref. Then when the repeatedly fouled player protests or (wrongly but somewhat understandably) lashes out, they’re the scourge of the game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not supporting their retaliation, particularly when it’s with the deliberately malicious intent of Rooney rather than the plain petulance of Ronaldo, but that issue is a mere side effect of a bigger problem. Referees need to stop defending players getting away with the intimidatory and deliberately harmful tactics that they are currently free to employ. The FAs, UEFA and FIFA should all be looking at this as much as any ‘respect’ campaign as you quite simply cannot expect players to respect officials when they are offered neither the protection nor the consistency that they should be able to rely on.

In my opinion, the first step should be to make yellow cards more meaningful and introduce a rugby-style sin-binning so that players and managers will know that any punishable offence, including retaliation or dissent, will provide a distinct advantage to the opposition. Communication from the referee should be clearer and more transparent – again learning from rugby in the use of clear and precise arms signals from the ref as to what is being punished, for the sake of players and fans, and by providing their mike feed to broadcasters and also having a TMO available for checking/confirming any incidents in the penalty box.

By ensuring the rules of the game are adhered to, there would be less need for shows of frustration from the currently targeted players. We would be free to see them perform to their best, dazzling the opposition and entertaining the crowd as we expect of them. We also wouldn’t be seeing one of the best players of his generation tied up in frustration and fear while he tries to recover from having already had bits of cartilage kicked loose in his ankle after just a handful of years as a professional footballer. And we’d be less likely to lose players of that calibre because the disgraceful actions of their less capable peers have seen their careers ended.

bringbacktraore (U8431567),

Notice how I used 'goons' in the plural - I wasn't just talking about Wilkinson. Or indeed just Stoke, but other Prem players.

Anyway, as witty as your chat about my hand being cut off was, I'm not entirely sure what you're on about. The drift of my original post was that I was berating Ronaldo.

Still, at least he managed to keep himself on the pitch for 90 mins eh?

Im not sure your assessment is entirely correct but Ronaldo should be revered as one of the greatest footballers ever to grace English fields, the cruel and career threatening tackles that threaten him weekly are a disgrace.

We may as well arm his opponent with commando knives and machine guns and encourgaqe them to stuff grenades up Ronaldos ass and pull the pin

----

Oh shoosh, if you take tackles out of the game what is the point in playing. Just because he has more skill than other players should not make him exempt from a tackle. He should just focus on his own game instead of crying everytime someone stops him doing an embarrassing pointless going nowhere step over that he does every game. He has been found out

Good for some anti UTD giving some banter to Ronaldo. But most of you guys have missed the bigger picture. Wilkinson was on a yellow already for committing a similar foul on Giggs in the 1st half. How stupid can he be to do the same on Ronaldo to get a second yellow, hence the marching orders, which cost his team a point. The guy then got the guts to clap his hands as if he's been stoke saviour !!!! Wat a disgrace to him..letting down his team mates, the club and his fans...well not the fans as they were clapping too!! You lost 3 points because of an idiot!!!

Stoke have taken the dirty tactics to another level. Their tackling is horrendous to say the least. Ronaldo and Rooney both became frustrated with it today and both lashed out in retaliation. I am sure we shall hear more about it in the aftermath.
Now I think there should be a new rule, that similar to basketball when a team reach so many fouls they are penalised. The referee was poor, letting many go, which didnt help matters.
The spectacle of the game was also ruined, because many United players were so scared about receiving a career ending injury from the awful leg breaking tackles they often hesitated and stayed clear of the ball. When it gets to this stage people need to be banned.

Ronaldo gets tackled fairly by Michael Dawson and kicks out like a spoilt brat, just because he's not had the swimming success like last season, and because against zokora at right back he did nothing threatening. Yet for the kick he receives no punishment. And then Mike Dean watches the replay and says if he had seen it he wouldn't have called it violent conduct. Oh Ronaldo was wearing a red shirt. Against Stoke, another FAIR BALL WINNING TACKLE sees Ronaldo lash out again like a little child that he is. Oh this game isn't going as swimmingly as he expected. Last I remembered in football, tackling was permitted, I think many legends are turning in their graves and many others are wishing they were already in them instead of watching these tarts "play" football. The second yellow given was a yellow card and in turn led to a second red, no argument, but I believe that was a retaliation and Wilks just wanted to show Ronaldo what a foul actually looks like, just in case he had forgotten because he falls over that much. And Rooney, well the linesman must have had a recent eye operation which actually made his sight worse than better. And I hate these articles that say Ronaldo APPEARED to lash out and Rooney SEEMED to throw an elbow, they didn't appear or seem to, THEY DID FULL STOP! These are the role models for the up and coming youngster of the game. That being the case, football can only get worse. The respect campaign is going so well isn't it?? The refs need to earn the respect from the fans before they will ever earn it from the players.
