Can an Atlantic League float?

Scottish Premier
comment on the article

Rangers manager Walter Smith is all for the Old Firm playing in a new European league, with some of the bigger sides from Holland, Belgium, Portugal and Scandinavia.
The idea was first mooted eight years ago, with Uefa's response rather cool.
Would Celtic and Rangers fans welcome such a move and just how realistic is it?
And what about Smith's suggestion that the Old Firm could leave B teams to play in the SPL?

he was captain, suffered injury?
so why didnt he come back from it then and prove his worth. Forest have nothing to do with the fact the SPL is an embarressment.

Thanks for your concern though. I wasnt even born when Forest won 2 euro cups, so to be honest im not bothered by it. We would still be the 3rd biggest team in Scotland though and that says something

"We would still be the 3rd biggest team in Scotland"

The usual ignorant retort from someone who has never attended a Scottish football match.

A word of advise for someone so young "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

our stadium, fan base, current squad, facilities, history, are all better then anything hearts, aberdeen, hibs or whoever can come up with. Thats a simple fact at the end of the day. Rob Earnshaw would probably score 50 goals in an SPL season.

Forest haad a 15 year period of success. you fan base is nowhere near the Hearts or Hibs - the population of Nottingham is less than Edinburgh! Home to Hearts and Hibs.

You are a provincial club that has success in the old days of football, where are you now? yo-yoing between Champions and League 1.

The old 2nd divsison and 3rd divisions - exactly where Brian Clough found you.....

Well I dont want be boring but lets bring Fact in to this:

Hearts average this season is 14,000
Hibs is 11,500
Aberdeen is 11,500

So how can Forest fan base (average 21,000 in an awful season. average 20,000 in past 3 LEAGUE ONE seasons) be worse then these teams?

Clough hasnt been around for 16 years now.

Nottingham is home to 3 clubs, Forest, County and Mansfield.

We are not exactly a yo-yo club either, when we got relegated it was for the first time in something like 50 years (to 3rd div). We spent 3 seaons there and came up, this season we have struggled but we arent out of it by any means.

This argument isnt about Forest, its about the sub standard of Scottish football.

Look at Rangers centre midfield for example:

Pedro Mendes (portsmouth bench)
Steven Davis (fulham + villa bench)

Just admit that Rangers and Celtic need to play in Premiership for their own good.

Thankyou. x

Can we stop dragging the Premier League into this - it's a non-starter and the vast majority of English football doesn't want it.

I didn't misunderstand your ("hard to beat's") comment, its just that I chnged it around a little for my own oint. I agree with comments of those who argue that doing away with domestic leagues would be a mistake. While I don't go to many away games, it would be too expensive to travel further afield every other week, all we would end up doing is putting more power into the media's hands, and we all know where that has got us so far! European football should be a reward for success. When our clubs qualify for Europe, it is an adventure, and we don't mind travelling for a few trips for that purpose. I also agree with the comments that one of the main problems is the growing disparity between bigger/smaller or richer/poorer clubs. Getting more clubs into more regular competition would I think, help to close the gap. As a Dundee United fan, I think that the main thing that helped us durng the 80's was that we qualified in successive years for Europe, and managed to do progressively better each time, as players, got more experience. Now, on most occasions, different clubs (other than the OF) qualify each year, and often are put in during the qualifiers, therefore, less experience is built up. As I said before, UEFA has been trying to extend european competition for some time, and the UEFA cup format will change again next year to extend it to more clubs. I think a third tier of competition could work if it was regional, as travel costs would be less and interest would be greater, as long as it runs concurrently with the other competitions - the Intertoto was a disaster, because it ran preseason, and was not regionalised. Guaranteeing all clubs who qualify for Europe a minimum of 8-12 games would help with the finances as well, as clubs would know where they stood, rather than have the prospect of being knocked out in the preliminary stages.

What about a 'small country' leauge? i.e. Norway, Denmark, Scotland.....Wales?

Top leauge of 20 teams and each country having it's own feeder leauge of 20 teams.

As for Celtic and Rangers in the EPL? they don't want them competing for European places.

As for Hearts, Aberdeen, etc. They used to have higher crowds when it was a more competitive league. Something has to change...that’s for sure.

Why do EPL fans always moan about the SPL (and our country) anyway? Look at my one, it’s bigger than yours...

1 top league of 16 teams between 7 countries (59 million viewers) seems very restricted. Why not 2 divs of 20 teams in such a big league? I think there are other teams in the SPL who 'could' be big enough to play in this Euro League with the money it brings. So, I think it would only be an option if 5 or 6 teams from scotland could play in a 2 tier system with the option for promotion to the league from the remaining teams in Scotland. This would surely sayisfy all?

I know of many former season ticket holders from other clubs who have given it up through boredom cos they don't see the point of paying for it when there are other bills to be paid.
