Arsenal need to work on their defence

Premier League Arsenal

Match of the Day analyst Lee Dixon talks in his tactics piece this week about a flaw in the Arsenal defence.

He reckons that the Gunners defence is generally pretty good but is sometimes guilty of defending too high up the pitch.

We saw this against Liverpool on Sunday, with the Arsenal back four caught out several times by Liverpool players exploiting space behind them.

Arsenal all looked somewhat vulnerable against long balls played over the midfield - and it was from one of these that Robbie Keane scored Liverpool's equaliser.

But as an Arsenal supporter do you think there is real cause for defensive concern or is it something that manager Arsene Wenger will be able to rectify on the training field?

"They hoofed it over the top like they always do because they're a boring long ball team?"

that made me chuckle, give that man a biscuit

"Now Villa are pulling their finger out and with a few lucky results they could do it, not becasue they are great but becasue Arsenal are poor. With players like Gallas, Adebayor, Bendter - all wide boys and probably should be at a team like Villa or Spurs."

I think liverpool could benefit from adebayor a lot more than villa - villa are fine up front but liverpool have a wildly overpriced misfiring striker to sort out. And as for villa not being great - take a look at who's sitting top of the form table!!

We need to play a Flamini type midfielder above the central defense. This will limit Gallas from coming up too often and prevent drop/ lob ball opportunities from opponents.
All hope is not lost though. I'm really praying that arsene will spend some money this January so we can tighten our DM.

It is not a massive cause for concern, but there is a problem. When Liverpool are conceding 12, Man U 10 and CHelsea 7, yet we're letting in 21 by Christmas, you can't say it helps matters. The problem it also creates is that it puts pressure on the strikers to score more. hence you get fallings out between defenders and forwards. Gallas needs to go, and we need a leader, not a wannabe, as a centre half who takes charge of the back four, and who knows what he's doing

Arsenal are in real deep, lets be honest. I cant seriously see them making top 4, but we have all been saying that for ther past two seasons

We have been top four, for more than just the last two season - You obviously know your football

If Arsene Wenger can't sort it, no one can. If I was an Arsenal fan, I'd be happy to place my trust in Wenger.

Erm last time i checked you dont get trophies for sitting on top of the last six form table! Top of the league at Christmas and doing it without Torres! Just wait till Nando is back then we have every chance!

I'd have to disagree, if Almunia is off his line it leaves a much larger space for an attacker to hit, the fact he has stayed on his line and his ability as a goalkeeper has meant Arsenal havn't conceded as many goals as they should have.

Easily solved. Look at that back 4 that got to the champions league final - it was make shift, in-experienced but didn't concede a goal. They key - it was coached by Martin Keown.

I remember against Juve, at one point, the back 4 all in unison took a step forwards and raised their hand to mark offside; blast from the past!?

So in short - yes, this can be solved on the training ground.

Arsenal are tactically brilliant, as is Wenger - their defensive tactics can be easily rectified.
yet now, without fabregas, their squad is far too poor to continue a serious title challenge, with 4th place even looking a little over ambitious at the moment

JonnyTorresFinkel ... arsenal are tacticaly brilliant so is wenger
.........................

Are you having a laugh mate????????

We are tacticaly very poor.

Although we are very skilfull playing fast flowing football, we can not deal with teams around us, especially when it comes to the physical challange.

Its football mr wenger not ballet.

we can only play a certain way and if teams counter act that then we always struggle

wenger has no plan B, apart from moaning when we dont get are way... and his favored plan C see is ' I did'nt see it'.
