Give your ground a new name

comment on the article

Bells, Books and Candles,

And so, as the season draws to it's close...no hang on...that's not strictly true is it? No, what I meant to say is: Does your team's ground have a dreary name?

I've always kind of liked ours: The Den. And Den it is - only the media types refer to the "New" Den. Although it is allowable to talk about "the old Den". And Colchester's Cuckoo Farm is tremendous and very worth envying.

However not all clubs are as fortunate. I mean, Britannia Stadium. The Emirates (dull AND corporate). Even The Stadium Of Light is a bit twittish. And as for City Of Manchester Stadium...I mean, really.

Anyway there's absolutely nothing standing in the way of us rebranding the duller of these aerodromes with brand new names all sexy and idiosyncratic.

Only actual supporters of clubs may re-christen their own stadiums.

And once somebody has logged it here NOBODY ELSE can argue. Once it's gone it's gone, first come first served and all that. It's no good whining to me if someone gets in first to brand St Mary's The Hellfire Atomic Bowl or something. Them's the breaks.

Give reasons for your new name where possible. If you chose it because it just sounds rocking, that's fine too.

Abusive, dull or sentimental choices are no good. Hopeless puns will be disqualified too.

The point is to give your ground an alternative identity that will outdo all your enemies on sight. Think big. Think crazed.

The new ground names shall be binding in the Tuesday 606 Universe forever and always referred to as such. They may not be explained further to puzzled outsiders.

I am in charge. And all that.

So go. Remember: Once it's changed it's changed and it may not be changed back. One per customer.

There is also a completely separate and bursting at the seams show tonight, and YES it is a musical so don't roll your eyes like that thank you.

What else?

Can't think.

My other team, Hereford United, have one of the most boring stadium names ever in Edgar Street. As their main sponsor is Sun Valley Foods, it should be renamed Pheasant Pluckers' Park. Be careful of how you say that !
As Arsene Wenger has limited eyesight, The Emirates should be renamed The Arsene should have gone to Specsavers Stadium.
As Jeremy Peace is as tight as a duck's posterior, The Hawthorns should be renamed Peace's Pennywise Park.

I'm a Sincil Banker (Sincil with soft "s" in the middle). Its a road next to the Roman Sincil Canal in Lincoln and I was brought up at number 59. I don't really want to change the name of the ground (Sincil Bank Stadium my **se).

But next to the ground we have "Cross Street" and "Scorer Street"! The latter named after Sam Scorer alocal architect and mayor yonks ago.

When I was a boy in the 50s the players would live in rented houses on those streets. How things have changed eh

As Swindon Town is in Wiltshire, famous for the antics of locals hoodwinking the excise men, the County Ground could be renamed "Moonnrakers' Manor."

Or "Home of Fraser Digby's Washbag!"

Being a Bristol Rovers supporter, our ground (which we share with Bristol Rugby) was renamed 'The Memorial Stadium' about 10 years ago. Previously it had been known as 'The Memorial Ground' since being renamed by the egg-chasers in 1920.

Prior to that, it was known as 'Buffalo Bill's Field', since Mr.Cody's 'Wild West Circus' had appeared there in the late 1800's.

Personally, I'd like it to revert to THAT name!

I have been to the "Mem" with Gashead mates and had i known it was previously called the evocative " Buffalo Bill's Field" would have gone sutitably attired in cowboy outfit complete with chaps.

It was only recently i realised Wolves ground is called Molineux Stadium rather than just plain old Molineux, apparently it has been that way for close to 15 years. I just had'nt noticed!
