What next for Carl Froch?

comment on the article

What a fight, what a tear up.

If you haven't seen Froch v Pascal, do whatever you can to watch it. Hunt it down on YouTube, buy the tape, watch a re-run on TV, do anything, because it was an absolute thriller.

I had the pleasure to be ringside and having never seen Froch fight before in the flesh I now see what all the fuss is about.

He’s not a modern day fighter but a throwback to the days of Eubank, Benn, Collins and to me that's a breath of fresh air. He’s a toe-to-toe fighter, but has that little bit of class that makes him more than a brawler, and now he's a world champion.

From the first bell he slugged it out with Pascal, who deserves more than his fair share of credit for this classic encounter. For 12 rounds the pair traded punch after punch before being dragged apart at the final bell - and had the referee not intervened they would probably have slugged it out for another couple of minutes.

The crowd at Nottingham's Trent FM Arena also deserve their praise for making Saturday's fight an amazing occasion.

Cries of "Nottingham, Nottingham" rang around the arena as their man entered the ring with the Guns and Roses classic, "Welcome to the Jungle" bellowing out of the PA system, and for the next 45 minutes or so you couldn't hear yourself think, let alone speak.

Those that had a bet on an early finish looked as if they would go home happy, but despite Pascal being rocked early on he came back strongly before Froch eventually claimed victory with a unanimous points win to claim the WBC super-middleweight title.

The fight I'm sure made great TV, but it had his promoter Mick Hennessy tearing his hair out as he saw his man take hit after hit, but Froch never wobbled and gave as good as he got and then some, and come the final bell, most knew he had done enough to win.

So what have we learnt about Froch after Saturday's fight?

1) He has the heart of a champion.
2) He has a great chin.
3) He has enough guile to slog it out for 12 rounds and win.

But how would he do against a seasoned boxer? Although Pascal was a worthy opponent, he had never fought outside North America and hadn't fought anyone who could be called world class.

Could Froch slog it out for 12 rounds, taking hit after hit against Mikkel Kessler for example, or would he have to revert to the tactics of rounds seven, eight and nine which saw him box behind his jab, and which saw him throw two or three punch combinations before stepping away?

The future for Froch looks bright. That fight wouldn't have gone unnoticed by promoters across the globe, and it seems the Nottingham man has a number of options. Jermain Taylor is his first mandatory opponent, and that fight could happen at New York's Madison Square Garden in April.

However, if Taylor turns down the fight, then Froch will again go after Joe Calzaghe, someone they have been chasing for nearly four years. Froch and Hennessy will also go after IBF champion Lucian Bute and WBA champion Kessler. But who do you think Froch should fight next?

Hennessy called Froch the most exciting fighter in the super-middleweight division, do you agree? Where does he rank in your opinion?

Froch had promised to "unleash hell" on Saturday and that's exactly what he did, but how good can he become and how much more can he achieve?

Whatever the future does hold for Froch, if Saturday's fight is anything to go by it's going to be one hell of a ride, and I for one cannot wait to jump on board.

Is Froch a true world champ though? He won a vacated title. In reality a true champ would either be the No1 or 2 supermiddles in the world contesting for the title wouldnt it be? As far as i know Froch and Pascal werent?
But Froch is a decent enough boxer with a good chin, and speed and a bit unorthodox, similar to Naseem Hamed.
He has achieved one of his goals Froch. But i dont think he will be the type of champ who goes unbeaten and defends his titles for too long. He will enjoy a decent year as champ maybe and im sure someone will come along and beat Froch. Though the division doesnt seem to be that strong at the moment. So maybe Froch will indeed reign for a while to come.

It was a bit depressing to hear Calzaghe slagging Froch and Pascal off on Talk Sport yesterday afternoon. What does he expect Froch to do? Not call him out? Its a boxers job to call out the top fighters when they reach belt winning level. I have no doubts that JC would beat Froch, put he should put up or shut up, fight Froch (stop hiding behind the "its not a draw in the USA" line) or bow out with grace and honour and let Froch have his time at the top!

As good as the Froch/Pascal fight was, the truth in my mind is this:

Froch was taken the distance by Pascal, who, by consensus of opinion, is not a Taylor/Kessler/Pavlik level boxer.

Froch took too much punishment, he might have a good chin, but how would it fair against a Kessler straight right? Or repeatedly Kessler straight rights? He might not get knocked out, but a broken jaw could happen.

I reckon Froch won't get knocked out for the count, but I do see him losing via TKO to a power puncher like Kessler/Pavlik.

Seems to me a lot of people are underestimating Jermaine Taylor...this is the guy who ended Hopkins 10 year reign as middleweight king, thats no mean feat. The losses to Pavlik hurt him, but he's still a fantastic boxer, and I could see him taking a points win over Froch.

Still, all credit to Froch, he fought a good fight, and he deserved to win, I just can't see him taking on the big guns until his defense improves, and he started blocking punches with his hands, rather than his face.

Give him 3/4 fights he'll be ready for the big names.

Still, if Taylor wants the fight, Froch has better learn his D pretty sharpish.

HA HA HA whatever!
Decent enough boxer maybe, but similar to Naseem!? Only in that he's got a good chin I'm afraid... he is similar in no other way at all!

This is the main problem i have with boxers like Froch. They think its impressive to have a low guard but its only impressive if you have the ability to dodge punches ala Naz. Its not impressive at all to take punch after punch that could easily be blocked with a bit of movement. Get your hands up Carl or you are gonna get KOd by Kessler.

Kessler a big name in Europe, bigger there than the rest of your list in America.

---------------------------------

Kessler is big in Denmark full-stop.

Can you honestly see any decent US fighters travelling to Denamark for a fight?

There are two reasons why the top US fighters won't fight Kessler.

1, He's unknown in the US.

2, He's very good.

But JT must fight Froch next. JT has had his fight with Jeff Lacy, so what excuse would he have not to box Froch?

All i can say Froch is let your mouth go free reign at JT like you do with JC, and im sure JT will box you. He wont want to lose face. C'mon Froch rip into JT if you want him real bad. Then put Pavlik on your shopping list, and then kessler for godd measures. That way we will see how good you really are. Fighting Pascal didnt show us too much really.

Well done Carl, but please dont fight Joe C, You will loose without a doubt, Joe isnt running scared when you have been a world champ over 10 years and have achieved what Joe has then you can run your mouth. Why would Joe C fight you what has he got to gain, no credit if he wins as expected as you have only just become world champ and gone the distance with a fighter who has had no world class opponents. Its like Man u playing Oxford united to prove whos the better team. You need to fight Kessler, Hopkins, Taylor and Pav even Bute and Bika before you will have any right to share the same ring with Joe C.

It seems Kessler is looking for fights next year with what he calls the 'big six' of Hopkins, JC, Pavlik, Wright, Dawson and Taylor. It would be interesting to know Kesslers view on Froch and Bute.
