(Yet) another shot of realism

Aston Villa

"Villa have been getting away with it for a long time"
"The squad just isn't good enough"
DAZ HALE (Radio WM)

"O'Neill is a lucky manager and his luck will run out. I wouldn't give him any money in January. I wouldn't trust him with it"
TONY BUTLER (Radio WM)

Maybe slightly knee-jerk reactions but with a huge ring of truth to them.

As I have always said, without any waiver at all, Villa's squad lacks both depth and quality beyond the first 11. This has been proved time after time, whenever MON has rung the changes in home games:

Hafnarfjordur (Finnish part-timers) 1-1
Litex Lovech (Bulgarian part-timers) 1-1
QPR (average Championship side) 0-1
Zilina (very poor Slovakian side) 1-2

Despite this being blindingly obvious, I have always been shot down in flames for saying so.
As promised I will keep repeating this until it sinks in.

It is NOT doom and gloom. With a quality striker amd two more additions (full back and wide midfield back-up) we WILL have the squad to finish 5th (as I have ALWAYS said).
MON is doing well and Villa are improving year on year but please once again, get real. We are not that good ........yet.

I will count the number of pillocks on here by the number of '1 star ratings' this gets.

Foolio,

Good to see you have already awarded Man Utd 3 points for their game in hand. Perhaps if you had the same optimism for Villa, the day after we qualified for the last 32 of the UEFA cup, you'd be a happier man. Yes MON has made some suspect sigings but I'd rather talk about the good one's. Yes I'd like us to score more goals, but you forgot to mention a goal diff of 6+ is the 5th best in the league. It comes as no surprise to me to find out we score more goals against the worst teams, its generally the case for most teams who play them. The fact of the matter is you're never going to be happy, if we won the league on the last day of the season, you'd bemoan not having it wrapped up by March. Having said that you're entitled to your opinions and no doubt we'll chat again. Providing I avoid getting knocked over by a bus, get hit by a falling satellite, stabbing myself to death with a potato, all distinct possibilities in your world.

"Can't afford it. Why do you bother going when we are so inept?"

I go because I am a Villa SUPPORTER. When I am at the ground, I am there to support the team as much as watch the footy. That used to be why people went to football, before Sky turned it into "entertainment".

Fool(io)888 what you have spotted are things that are simply not true though!

we could use a stronger suqad but couldn't you say that about every team in the world?

we dont have a natural goal scorer? i think agbonlahor is the 3rd top scorer in the league and was about that last season as well!!

flair?! are ash, gabby, barry milner all not good enough for you?

suspect signings?!! this is the funniest one of the lot! A. Young cost 10 mil and now he is one of the top performers in the premier league and worth at least 20mil! reo coker alwasy gets overlooked but does a great job for us as will shorey and luke young given time to settle in!

the problems are pretty obvious and its not in the attacking department! we still conceed too many goals which will always leave us with inconsistent form!

Foolio,
Barry and Gabby have proven to long-term treasures. So MON puts up with a few bad uns, cause no-one, not even you(!) are perfect and have perfect games every game. MON puts up with it for so long, and if the medium to long term outlook doesn't look good, he drops them, and others get in the team. He does this for a reason; it's called stability. Do you want rafa the rotator instead. Then it would be, 'MON rotates his squad too much.....blah, blah'.

Get in line, get your prozac mate.

Spot on EDAVFC. That's why MON bought Cuellar, the best player, allbeit, in the SPL last year. He has bought defenders, and under Laursen, they will gel into a great unit, given time (which foolio has obviously run out of!).

And to those who say he should not be content with losing and qualifying, what was he supposed to do? Say to the kids last night, 'that's rubbish, and not good enough for villa? You have a lot of growing up to do and you're cr-ap'.

Maybe he wants to just encourage them, grow their confidence (as Fonz showed last night),and develop them a bit, instead of putting 17 yr guys down. Perhaps his glass is half full, and not completely empty like yours?

i actually thought Zilina played some nice football last night! they were a lot better than i was expecting them to be!
because we were basically through already before last night i dont think the result was MON's only prioirty for the game it was as much about seeing how the likes of osbourne, delfouneso and salifou adapted to starting a game and what i saw was fairly pleasing, i still think we should have played one experienced centre midfielder alongside a youngster but all in all its promising, which is bascially what MON has said so cut him some slack!

The strength of squad arguement is pointless, its always going to be the case you are looking to stregthen the squad whether you are top or bottom of a league. Man U won the prem and champions league, they still went out a brought in Berbatov, so by his actions Fergie wasn't quite happy with his squad last year. So to all you doom and gloom merchants, no the squad isn't strong enough and for your inoformation, it won't be next year or the year after that or the year after that or the year after that.... so please can we enjoy what we have.

Based purely on league position and the performances against ManU, Arsenal and Ajax, we are having an excellent season. I hope it continues.
I fully accept (and am extremely happy) that the positives outweigh the negatives. I think we have improved immensly under MON(and Randy). I also think that he has bought in some excellent players and moulded them into a very good side on their day. Discussing a teams/managers failings doesn't make me a moaner. It just means that I don't wear rose tinted specs.

Anyone on this board who posts that they have never said a single negative word about MON, his team, or a decision he has made must surely be a liar or a hyprocrit. So don't knock me for pointing out things which I experienced with my own eyes @ VP this season.

If I was posting "Villa are s***, sack MON he's a useless t*****" then fair enough. Flame away. All I'm trying to do is have an open, honest discussion about the team we all watch, and some of us actually go and support.

Based on the side that started last night this was not a shock defeat as some newspaper articles or the BBC website state. I watched the game last night in Southern Germany and knew straight away from the team selection that we would struggle. Knight has not started a premier league game, we have a right back playing at left back, a central midfield partnership that didn't seem to exist. But I blame MON, he should have had at least one experienced midfielder in there and I do not think that game will have done much for the confidence of Knight, Salifou or Osborne. They played far the better football, passing and moving, which is waht we should have been doing. and apart from a lot of half chances did not create any clear cut chances. The opposition would have looked at our line up and thought we can win this whereas maybe our expectation was that we would win whichever side we put out. The hardest thing to take is that we had a great chance to win the group last night and could have afforded to then lose to Hamburg (albeit without a heavy defeat), but now we have to go and win if we want to avoid a team that drops out of the Champions league. Yes I am sure we would play one eventually and it will make for another fantastic night at Villa Park but why make life difficult and do things the hard way!
