just a quick one.....
i havent had a proper look through the articles already posted tonight so i dont know what the feeling is towards james at the moment but i just wanted to remind everyone how often weve sung his praises in the past and that even though tonights blunder was a costly one we should look beyond that and remember the fact that he is one of the best keepers in the league. we will miss him if he leaves in january especially with the defence in the state it is, if anyone should be looked at after tonights game it should be sol, i thought he was slow and sloppy tonight and isnt as consistant as he used to be. that aside lets put tonight out of our minds and start thinking about 3 points on sunday! then the pressure is off next thursday and we can play some nice football and get our first european win!

PLAY UP POMPEY

FFD ok

I know, but what can you do?

The fact is he made our first goal and saved a penalty last night as well.

We would never have beaten ManU in the quarter-final without him either. (and therefore go on to be in Wolfsburg last night)

He helped to get us into Europe and he helped to get us out as well.

I can't think of a better goalie in the PL though.

Agreed.

It's a shame our Euro adventure is finished. I don't think we really did ourselves justice.

I hope that the team can put an end to the leaks at the back and then we may have a chance of pushing up the league and maybe qualify for next year, but it's going to be very tough.

Steve Claridge said that we were just not good enough. He has a point when you look at the results.

David James will always bring calamity and sadly thats what the papers will say, however when you actually sit back and think what a briliant keeper he is. Im a loyal England fan and never feel more safe when David is beetween the sticks, crazy but true! - James is still one of the best shot-stoppers in England, and lets be honest his heroics are the reason there in the UEFA Cup, You win as a team and lose as a team. Chins up, play up

I was bemused by the team selection last night.

I couldn't see the reasoning behind leaving Diop and Crouch out. PBD has been our best midfielder since Diarra got injured, and Crouch and Defoe are always going to put a defence under pressure and ensure that the opposition cannot over-commit to attack.

You have to look at the positives though, and we can only hope that the UEFA commitments of Villa, Man City and Spurs lead to them dropping league points!

Read most of these posts. IMO

1. 2 Pivotal moments - the Defoe near miss 2-1 up and the Krunchie free kick which hit the crossbar. If either of those had gone in I would have fancied our chances for a win.

2. If Harry had spent less time on the phone to Spurs rather than concentrate on Braga we might have got something - if you lose the ist game in a group of 5 and one of the other teams is AC Milan then you are unlikely to qualify.

3 TA is still learning and will improve.

4. James is a tremendous asset and made a couple of good saves last night and saved a penalty as well.

5. Wolfsburg may turn out to go quite well in the comp who knows we may have had a tough group.

6. We have a real chance now to go for 6th and defend the FA cup properly!

David James' qualities are well known and that is why he wouldn't be my England Keeper.

Great skills, but can give a goal away at any time, James is ideal for Portsmouth who aren't expected to win every game so the odd mistake is an acceptable price to pay for the many occasions he'll save a team. Tony Yebohas' goal of the season for Leeds against James who was then playing for Liverpool encapsulates James' brilliance. The shot went as fast as a bullet to the top corner and most keepers wouldn't have moved, Robinson couldn't have reached it incredibly James got a hand to it.

I've thought from his U21 days that Kirkland is the best keeper avalable for England. James has tremendous natural ability is ideally built but Kirkland is taller than and has the same scope and is very secure but is rarely fit which is unfortunate and Englands loss.

as i agree with you on james with his lapse of conentration but also the guy 38 yrs old and he is still showing the kids how its done he is
good shape and his reactions are as good as any goal keeper in the world. i know thats a bit of a bold statement but his career says it all.

everybody was writting him off and calling him calamity james but he showed them he still had it last season he proved to be the best keeper for sky's team of the season. he still has it he's just a bit cold thats all.lol
