Wolfsburg 3-2 Portsmouth

Uefa Cup Portsmouth
comment on the article

Pompey crash out of the Uefa Cup with a second defeat in three European games.

David James' mistake let in Bosnian playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic who tucked the ball away to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.

Earlier Pompey had recovered from Edin Dzeko's third-minute opener with a double blast from Jermain Defoe and Arnold Mvuemba, before Christian Gentner's cross shot secured parity.

James restored some pride with a late penalty save but it wasn't enough to spare Portsmouth an early departure from Europe.

We want your thoughts on the defeat, and the significance of the Uefa Cup exit.

I feel really sorry for James - one of the few footballers who actually seems like a thoroughly decent and intelligent bloke - he even writes for The Observer! So talented but as we all know prone to total howlers. Pity sadface

WHAT BLUE IS VASILIS(A GOOD OLD ENGLISH NAME I THINK) SOUNDS LIKE HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT DAVID JAMES OR POMPEY. HE IS PROBABLY ONE OF THOSE JERKS WHO SUPPORTS A TEAM NOBODY HAS HEARD OF AND WHO DONT HAVE A 606 BOARD OF THEIR OWN. STILL NEVER MIND HE WILL BE ON HIS SCHOOL HOLIDAYS SOON

Now back from Wolfsburg I have to say that Pompey showed a disappointing performance overall. Their support was fantastic and in good voice but the team simply canīt show the same enthusiasm on the pitch. What really surprised me was the slow tempo in the Portsmouth game. The "Wolves" - as they are called in Germany - really seemed to play a bit faster. The Pompey defence is below average at the moment. Sol Campbell has been a classy defender but his time is up now. Just look at the first goal. With or without him: Pompey concede too many cheap goals. And how many blunders from Calamity-James can the supporters still tolerate? It is nice to save a penalty but the second goal from Wolves was unnecessary. No words about the third. Plus-points in the starting line-up: Defoe (but hardly any support for him upfront) and Belhadj (quick and ambitious). The rest: silence. An uninspired midfield (Kranjcar!) without creativity (Davis the worst of all) and lethargic full-backs (Johnson), the subs almost invisible (Crouch, Kanu). Sorry to say but the Pompey supporters deserved a better quality from their side and more courage given the starting position with a must-win. Even some of the Wolfsburg supporters were a bit disappointed with the display of their guests. But Portsmouth might qualify again for Europe via the FA-Cup and could do better next time. My greeting to all Pompey supporters with which I had a couple of drinks in a greek taverna in Wolfsburg!

I aint scottish! My point was the top4 dominate europe but outside of that most english side struggle alittle in the uefa cup which makes me think they would have no chance in champions league, At least Rangers made the final of uefa cup not bad for a pub team from scotland!!

UEFA Cup is different competition, anyone can beat anyone,
No offensive, but a poor Rangers team got to the final, as well as a poor Middlesborough team.

Spurs got to the Quarters in 2007, and last season Spurs everton and Bolton got to the last 16.

What are you on about, Man City are top of their group Spurs are 2nd in theirs, Villa should still qualify, 3 out of 5 in Uefa cup is not bad in the least considering the qulity of teams in there.

If Scottish Teams are so good, why is it that only Rangers and Celtic appear in this competition? Where's Hibs? Hearts? Motherwell?

I have just got to say to everyone who thinks the premier league is the best league in europe is absolutely WRONG....

What i dont understand is how the english clubs manage to play so poorly and still manage to take a respectable scorline out of it. Taking this match for example, wolfsburg were by far the better team (and you have to remember that they had their main striker Grafite out becuase of injury as well), and yet they conceeded twice. If an english club played exactly like wolfsburg played they would have thrashed portsmouth 5-0. So the only positive portsmouth can take out of this match is the result and the fact that wolfsburg were not their clinical best.
Lets be honest portsmouth are not a team that should be in the uefa cup.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe Portsmouth weren't at their best either?? May I remind you that it took a last minute goal for AC Milan to rescue a point against them.

Your a WUM and anti-EPL to the last, and even comparing the German league to the English league is a joke, the Bundesliga has two decent sides in Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich, after that the rest (including wolfsburg) are poor
