Scots & Welsh to bid for Euro 2016

International Scotland
comment on the article

Not for the first time, a football association spokesman for a home nation has said 'tentative' talks have taken place on a joint bid between Scotland and Wales for Euro 2016...

With the tournament set to expand from 16 to 24 teams, small nations no longer have a realistic chance of hosting the event alone.

But could the Scots and Welsh cope with such an enormous tournament?

And would the massive investment required to make it feasible be money well spent?

I'm just not sure they'd be able to get the crowds for enough of the games. At Hampden Park the other week, when Scotland hosted Argentina, ranked in the top three in the world and coached by Scottish national treasure Diego Maradona, there were 20,000 empty seats. What's it going to be like when Norway play Belgium in 2016?

Hendero

the Argentina game was a mid-week friendly, on a freezing cold night, in the run up to Xmas. Of course there's going to be empty seats.

In the middle of summer many of the men folk will postponse holidays to go to games on their doorstep. Might not be happy with their wives, but I know I would.

The crowds would be made up of 70% of fans from the countries concerned, 10% hospitality and 20% from the home countries. That's between 5000 to 16000 people. I'm sure they'd sell.

Good bit of info from Hatchetman there too, that's even less than Poland & Ukraine.

That would mean the average capacity in Germany was 35375.

With Murrayfield, Hampden, Ibrox and the Millenium as a base (avg 65500) we would only need another 6 stadia with around 30,000 seats. With the Liberty and Cardiff Cities grounds probably expandable (with temp seats) they're not far off 30,000 as it is.

Even at 30,000, a stadium in Dundee, Edinburgh and Aberdeen of that size would not be excessive.

Mark

right so you want to be with us at the olmpycis but not in all events I am sorry but if oyu in our team in other events you have to be in our team for the football in my view.

If we had our way Wales would be independant in all sports, being part of team gb, is more or less forced on us,

Don't get over excited boys, it's going to be in Italy anyway! As if UEFA would consider it being in Wales! Apart from the stadium in Cardiff, where else would they play? Swansea, Ninian Park and Wrexham, ha,ha!
