Getting into boxing?

Does anyone on these boards have any experience in the amateur/pro ranks? If so, is there a route you could take and is there a certain age to start at as well? I am 20 and would like to start boxing, is it to late to start and actually make it?

Also De La Hoya will beat Pacquiao, even though I would love to see Manny win.

It's never too late to start, i spent a long time boxing, and in all truth mate it is too late to "make it" granted there are fighter out there who have started late and done well but you'll learn that your up against it the moment you start to train and discover just how difficult boxing is. It's a great sport though and there's no reason why you can't go on to become a good amateur, you will get out of it what you put in basically.

Most great fighters have usually proven their potential by the time they're 20, but don't let that put you off.
If you put the time in down the gym, have some athletic ability & good coordination, are willing to train hard and have a good trainer, then you should be able to have a few bouts before the end of the season.
It's not an easy game though, and you need a lot of patience; it'll take a while before you start to feel like you can handle yourself in the ring.

my man at the ABA tells me there is one not far from you. its called ironworks ABC.Unit 2b Mill Walk, Northfield, Birmingham, they don't have a contact number but if you call their competitions secretary(matchmaker) Mick Redmond 07816 422394. he should be able to halp you.

hope this helps. get yourself down there and give it your best. Rocky Marciano didn't start till late, so you never know!

A lot of great fighters started late but for the most part you wanna be down the gym from your early teens. However, with a bit of natural ability and a lot of hard work you can succeed at ABA.
Thing is about the ABA, you can have as many bouts as your willing to take and thusly your talent and ability will grow in proportion to your experience (assuming your not a donkey).

Therefore giving you a good spring board to the pros in a matter of years if you have the ability and the hunger.

Good luck

hey....its never too late...especially if you have the one thing i didn t....dedication !!!

20 is no age, i have friends who started at that age and didn t bother with the amateur game andn turned pro. i coached a couple of guys who didn t start boxing till they were 25 and had many amateur fights,so find a local gym and learn the basics son !

bonecrusher smith didn t start boxing till he was 28....and he became a heavyweight champion of the world !!
