Will Andy Murray win a slam next year?

I may be verbally attacked for my comments, but I personally think that Murray will never win a Major, just like Henman. French - No chance, hasn't got the game to play on clay.
Wimbledon - Home pressure and Federer around means little chance for me.
Australian and US possible, but don't see it. I hate the terminology that Murray has had a magical year, no he hasn't he won nothing of major note. He has had a good year, not magical.
He does have moments when he can beat the best, however, he always can lose to worse as the Olympics demonstrated. He cannot for me consistently play at top of his game for two weeks to win a major. Yes he got to final of US and then was stuffed, he was good position and probably favourite to win the one worth tournament outside the majors, being the masters and bottled that.

P-to-the-P. Agree that Murray's year was very good but not great. But he has yet to reach his peak and I would argue that with his best to come he can certainly win a Slam.
Henman was a very good and consistent player but you never thought he really had a Slam in him. Murray, on the other hand, is already a better player than Henman IMHO and a Slam or two is a distinct possibility.

sirfredperry I agree with some your comments, but there have been many players in the past who had been a flash in the pan so call to speak, who stood around for a couple of seasons before fading away. Yes he could have the best years ahead of him, but still could other players that haven't hit the big time yet progress and he could also fall away. Personally, I don't think he has the mental toughiness to progress to win a major, it takes more than ability sometimes.

If you had seen any of his matches at the end of this year then you wold know that this is simply not true.

2 sets up on nadal (the strongest player mentally on the tour atm) and a break down in the 3rd in the US Open semi final. He loses the third set after the resumption and promptly goes a break down in the 4th. Instead of crumbling, like most of Nadal's opponents do at this point under the mental pressure applied by Rafa, he goes on to break twice and win the match.

After the final loss to Federer he plays him the him twice more in 2008. Both times he loses the first set only to ocme back and win in 3. In fact at TMC he was 5-2 in the second set and Federer pulled him back to a tie break. Murray still won the tie break.

Finally, the second best record on the tour this year against top 10 opponents (after Nadal of course) goes to Andy Murray.

I just don't think the mental side of his game is as weak as you say.

Basically, it was all there with Murray when he was only 18. He just needed the fitness and the experience.
What gives him the edge is his court craft. He manages usually to play the right shot at the right time and can adapt his game to the type of opponent he plays.
I thought even in his early days that he looked a better player than Henman in every department save for his net play. As for the mental side - you don't beat Fed three times in a year and defeat Rafa in a GS semi-final if you're mentally frail.

No guys you don't but its not about substaining it for one match or more it's for a two week period as I mentioned before. One tough match and the energy seems to zap from Murray and he get's beaten in the next round anyway. Yes, he's had the tough draws on occasion, but that's life. I 'll be 1st back on the forums congratulating Murray if he does.

I agree that one of the (very few) remaining weaknesses in Murrays game is his poor recovery time between matches. However, given the improvements he's made in every other aspect one has to feel this will follow too. His physical training is said to be second to none on the tour.

It must have been the incisive nature of the post that lead to 50 replies!

This is my prediction/s for the slams this year

Aussie open Nadal/Murray/Federer

French
Nadal

Wimbledon
Nadal/Murray/Federer

Us Open
Murray/Federer

Obviously this will depend on seedings and rankings but I feel it is quite an accurate prediction/s
