Why Amjad Khan and Saj Mahmood?

One-day internationals England

Apparently England have called up Mahmood and Khan as cover for Broad and Flintoff. I would have thought Bresnan and Plunkett were better like-for-like replacements, and I thought Bresnan was next in line anyway. Both are in India, aren't they?

@ Chuck

Dude, I'm not writing an academic thesis on the indian national game so I think I might get away with using that as a "source".

@ Tub - Thanks smiley

On the original point....

Bresnan definitly deserves a shot and should be ahead of Mahmood in the order anyway IMO.

Plunkett has prospects but he looked pretty expensive and unable to adapt last time I watched him on sky in the Pro40..? Bit of a poor mans Broad..!

We should be looking for proper bowlers, injury aside, Fred gives us the luxury of an extra bat so we shouldn't be scrabbling round for all rounders anyway.

Just for fun and injurys aside:

Cook (pigeon holed to early)
Shah
Pietersen (C)
Collingwood
Bopara
Flintoff
Prior (W)
Broad
Sidebottom
Harmison
Panesar (as with Cook)

Thats balance, proper bowlers, proper batsmen and Fred!

"Even you guys get excited about the Ashes, bless."

Errrrrm no. The best, most exciting (certainly for Indians) and definitely most competitive series in the world at the moment is India vs Australia.

"Watching you guys sulk last time the Aussies punished you in Australia was a delight"

Errrrrm, im not entirely sure which series you were watching but i think the final score was 2-1. After the first test we outplayed the Aussies, just like we did in the 03/04 tour. Also, as someone else has mentioned we beat Australia and Sri Lanka in the CB series.

"I say again - India = HALF A BILLION to choose from. England = 10 Million tops"

This statement is just pure ignorance, there maybe half a billion people playing cricket in India but there certainly isn't half a billion people to choose from. England have an advantage in that the facilities and coaching is of a far higher standard in England than in India. Most people that play cricket in India don't ever even get to play for a club.

@ neon

More tongue in cheek than ignorance mate. I will admit now that I am not a foremost authority on Indian grass routes cricket....

Plus I should say now that I love watching India play cricket, they seem to be taking it to a new level.

If only you knew the frustration of being an England fan lol

I support the call-up of Mahmood and Amjad....

Doesnt' matter now, though, after the atrocities that have been committed in Mumbai.

Amkad Khan seems an obvious choice. He wasn't born in the UK and he has already had reconstructive knee surgery.

To be honest all you India supporters with our full strength test team in England we would win the series 5-0, no doubt because we have class test squad and your one spin trick wonder wouldn't work in England plus none of your batsmen would be able to play the swing.

Why not Gus and Aggers? They are acclimatised.

I haven't seen much of amjad, but I know that Mahmood has been bowling very well since he was dropped by England. His problem then was that he gave away too many runs but he has worked on that and still remains a wicket - taker.

But this does not matter too much as the ODI sereis has been cancelled.
