Lennox annex?

So, after years of baiting, it appears Lennox Lewis may finally have taken, well, the bait and announced his intention of coming back to "save" his "sport". Well, with one small caveat that is... and that is if someone can offer him an enormous $100 million.

Hardly a exercise in altruism is it? I mean, I'd save any sport for that kind of money. Including WWF... although, I believe WWF is technically categorised a form of theatre.

Anyway, does anyone else get the feeling that this is merely Lewis having a bit of fun at ours and the media's expense? A bit of jest intended to make a mockery of the constant references regarding him returning to the ring - given how many times he's reiterated his convictions to the contrary. I mean, could he honestly, seriously expect to make $100m from just one more fight?

The obvious choice would, of course, be Vitali Klitschko, but would the boxing public really fork out the kind of readies he's asking for to see these two aged warriors settle an ancient score? I really don't think so. In fact, I think many may well see through any such potential bout as resembling more a money-making marketing circus than a relevant clash of two peak-level titans.

Well, what about Haye then? I mean, he's meant to be the next big thing isn't he? Well, on paper it seems a nice idea but the only way it'd make even NEARLY the amount of money Lennox is quoting is if he fought Haye in 18 months or so with Haye as the unified champion - should (and it's a very big 'should') that happen. Otherwise, mainstream wise, it simply wouldn't generate that kind of interest.

Personally, yes, I probably would pay to watch him fight should he return, but does that mean I want him to? No, it doesn't. Whoever he fights. It's a cliche, but he really does has nothing left to prove. Simple as that. Being a hall-of-famer is rare enough in itself, but being one who got out at exactly the right time and stayed out is rarer still.

As I've said though, I get the distinct feeling that all of this is moot and that the ridiculousness of Lennox's 'proposal' is merely intended as an indicative comparable to just how ridiculous he considers the whole idea in the first place. So, what are people's thoughts?

LL is not coming back so let snot be fooled by the stupid media reports. Unlike most boxers LL was not only classy but smart on and off. His legacy is more important than money. He invested his money well and should stay retired.

He'd be mad to comeback at his age and after such a long break. If he lost, which he almost certainly would, his reputation and legacy would be forever tainted. Is that worth any amount of money? I think Lewis is too sensible to risk his reputation which he right cherishes.

"Lewis has not fought since retaining his WBC title against Vitali Klitschko in 2003 and the Russian has said he would be interested in a re-match, something Lewis is not interested in."

Klitschko isn't Russian, he's Ukrainian...

I think Lewis is having a bit of a giggle - he's far too sensible to do this.

Plus his Mum would kill him!

Pompey -what are you talking about? you are actually comparing Khan, an overhyped domestic fighter who lost to a relative unknown after a run of easy hand picked oppenents (even Limmond technically beat him) to Haye, a proven world class boxer who held WBA, WBA, WBO cruiserweight belts undefeated before moving up to heavyweight. Lennox should stay retired and leave this division to Haye

It would be a completely pointless exercise in coming back. He's got nothing to prove.

Big $$$ can attract even the most retired of boxers.
$100m is easily achieved through pay per view.
It would need to be againsy VK or WK though.
If Holyfield does the biz then that might be the catalyst to draw LL out.
Personally, I'd rather he stayed retired.

Lewis is rolling in money, the boxers who come back after they've retired are either a) the type who have boxing so entrenched in them that they can't stay away (in which case why put a price of $100m on it) or b) the type who need the cash because they never managed their money wisely (tyson, Holyfield etc)

Lennox is neither of these

C'mon Lennox, cut the bull. Boxing does not need you and I do not see anyone coughing up anywhere near $100.m to tempt you back. The biggest fight out there will be against Vitali Klitschko and it still would not generate enough PPV figures to get HBO to cough up. I know you are only playing with journos who keep asking you if you are about to make a comeback. Damn, it is good to be back in the limelight. But the fact is as you say yourself,''been there, done that.'' Unless you are a genetic freak of nature like B.Hop, the ring aint no place for a 43yr old. And what glory is there in scuffling about with nonedescript East Europeans and sad old men like Holyfield and Bowe, who are looking to regain the glories of long gone youth?
But, hell Lennox, some fool offers 20.m to 30.m to pound what little stuffing there is out of 'Ridiculous' Bowe, that's gotta be fun! But joking aside, you are way too sensible to seriously contemplate a comeback. You even think about it and the two Violets ..your lovely mother and beautiful wife..will combine to bust your backside!!
